TURLOCK, Calif. – The Central Washington University softball team ended its seven-game California road trip in dramatic fashion, defeating Sonoma State University 6-4 in 10 innings to improve to 24-6 on the season after downing Dominican 1-0 in the opener. The Wildcats finish the Tournament of Champions (TOC) with a 5-1 record.
Tied 2-2 heading into the ninth inning against Sonoma State,
Julia Reuble crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to put the Wildcats up 4-2. The Seawolves battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, forcing another extra frame. In the tenth,
Kailyn Campbell came to bat with runners on first and third and found the left center field gap, scoring both runners and giving the Wildcats the 6-4 victory.
The victory over Sonoma State was close and competitive from start to finish.
Celine Fowler broke the 0-0 tie with a rbi single, scoring
Rachael Johnson to put CWU up 1-0 in the third inning.
The Seawolves tied the game in the fourth inning and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Johnson led off with a bunt single, and two batters later Campbell singled to right center, advancing Johnson to third. On a 1-1 count,
Jacie McDaniels hit a towering fly ball to center, recording a sacrifice fly, scoring Johnson on the play.
Sonoma threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh inning with a runner in scoring position with two outs. Designated player Madison Barto struck a line drive deep into right field, where senior
Sammy Morris angled down the ball to force extra frames.
With the international tie breaker in affect, neither team scored in the 8th inning. In the top of the ninth, with Campbell placed on second base, Reuble took the offering over the left field fence to give CWU a 4-2 lead.
For the fourth time in the game, Sonoma State tied the score, this time in the ninth inning.
In the tenth,
Molly Nutt advanced Morris to second on a sacrifice bunt. After the Seawolves struck out the following batter, Fowler eanred a two out walk bringing up Campbell. With a base open, the Seawolves elected to pitch to the all-American, and Campbell made them pay by stroking a long double to left center, scoring two runs and giving the Wildcats the final 6-4 advantage.
Kiana Wood pitched all 10 innings to improve to 12-1 on the season. She allowed just seven hits, and used 101 pitches. Wood went 2-0 at the TOC with a 1.11 ERA.
Kayla Smith and Wood combined for a complete game, five-hit shutout as the Wildcats defeated Dominican 1-0 in the opener. Smith went the first five innings to earn the victory and improve to 7-4 on the season, while Wood hurled the final two to earn her second save of the season.

Jacie McDaniels that plated
Sammy Morris.
The Wildcats will make the 16 hour bus trip back to Ellensburg, where they host Simon Fraser and Western Washington on Apr. 8 and 9, respectively.
