BILLINGS, Mont. -- Freshman
Julia Reuble had a career-day for the Central Washington Softball team, tying a CWU single-game record with seven RBIs in the Wildcats 11-1 game-one victory over Montana State Billings Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats took game-two 3-1 behind a game-winning two-run homerun by
Kailyn Campbell in the seventh inning.
With the day one sweep, CWU improves to 29-7 on the season and 16-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Billings drops to 14-25, 8-10 in the GNAC.
Reuble hit a pair of homeruns in the five inning series opener, a three-run shot in the first and a grandslam in the second, giving her the record-tying RBI count. This feat had been done four other times in CWU history, most recently by Jill McDaniels, sister of current CWU shortstop
Jacie McDaniels. Reuble now has five homeruns on the season and pushed her RBI total to 25.
Campbell also hit two homeruns in the night cap, leading the game off with a solo homerun in the first inning, and virtually ending the game on a two-run blast in the seventh to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead. Campbell now stands with 10 homeruns on the season, tying her for the team lead with McDaniels.
In game one, the Wildcats totaled 10 hits.
Celine Fowler led the way with a perfect 3 for 3 performance including a pair of runs scored. Campbell and Reuble each had two hits, with Campbell providing a two-run single in the second inning.
Senior pitcher
Kiana Wood improved to 15-1 on the season with the complete game victory. She used just 57 pitches over five innings, allowing just four hits and one unearned run. The outing also gave Wood 12-straight decisions where she has record a win, which is a new school record.
Central had eight hits in game two, with Campbell's two big flies providing all of the runs. Billings tied the game in the top of the first inning on a Heather Tracy homerun. The score remained tied heading into the fifth where Billings threatened with a runner on, before freshman
Paige Liikala teamed up with senior
Taylor Ferleman on a pick off play, tagging the runner out and ending the MSUB threat.
Up 3-1 in the seventh after Campbell's second homerun, Wood shut down the Yellowjackets in just seven pitches to pick up her third save of the season.
Kayla Smith started in the circle and had a terrific outing, allowing just five hits, with no walks, three strikeouts, and the one run over six innings of work to improve to 9-5 on the season.
The Wildcats wrap up its four-game series with MSUB tomorrow, Apr. 15 starting at 11 a.m. Pacific.
