ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Apr. 29) – The Central Washington University baseball team swept its doubleheader against Western Oregon on Senior Day.
The Wildcats are now 28-18 overall, with a 22-14 mark in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
"We sent the seniors out at home with a bang," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said afterward. "You know, for us to bounce back like that after dropping two yesterday, I'm proud of these guys. They don't quit. There's always fight left in them and we saw that again today. They bounced back and got the job done today. I'm proud of them."
In game one,
Conor Plaisance got the Wilcats' on the board with a double to left center, scoring
Dylan Freyre in the bottom of the first.
Western Oregon responded in the second, scoring Jacob Martinez on a single by Joey Crunkilton. The Wolves scored three in the third, netting a 4-1 advantage.
Central Washington mounted a comeback in the fifth, starting with a solo blast by Plaisance.
Kyle Stahl reached on an error with the bases loaded, scoring
James Smith III.
Rory Graf-Brennen then singled to right, allowing
Christopher Dalto and
Sam Welton to jog home and give the Wildcats a 5-4 lead.
Neither side was remotely close to being done on offense.
Western Oregon's Forrest Garcia singled home Justin Wakem in the seventh, levelling the score at 5-5.
The Wildcats picked up a pair of runs, thanks to sacrifices by Plaisance and Dalto, staking out a 7-5 lead.
A wild pitch in the eighth brought home
Justin Hampson, before Plaisance swatted his second big fly of the game, this time a three-run shot, for an 11-5 lead. Dalto crushed a two-run homerun of his own a few batters later and gave Central a 13-5 lead.
The Wolves put up six runs in the ninth inning, but
Dillon Larsen was able to shut the door for his first save of the season.
Griffin Davis (4-2) earned the win. He allowed four runs on seven hits, five walks, and three strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
The Wildcats got out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game two. Stahl hit a laser to left center field that left the ballpark and crashed into the scoreboard with
Robert Ball on base.
Martinez the Wolves on the board in the fourth. He singled into right field and an error allowed Nyles Nygaard to score. A sacrifice fly later brought Martinez around, as well as a tie game.
Western Oregon launched a four-run offensive in the top of the sixth inning for a 6-2 advantage.
The Wildcats responded immediately. Smith launched a solo homerun to left center, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Ball later drove home Dalto, before
Yi-an Pan laid down a bunt single which scored
Michael Heinevetter.
Ty Deckwa tied the game with a single through the left side, scoring Pan. Freyre then doubled to center, driving home both Stahl and Deckwa for an 8-6 advantage.
Kyle Blankenship (4-3) earned the win in relief. He hurled 1.1 innings of shutout baseball, striking out one hitter.
The Wildcats are back in action next weekend for the regular season finale at Montana State Billings.
