Softball Earns Sunday Afternoon Split with WWU

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington Softball team split its two-game series with Western Washington University, winning game one 9-1, and dropping game-two 0-9.

With the split, Central is now 27-7 on the season and 14-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.  The Vikings now stand at 18-15, 7-7 in the GNAC.

In the opener, the Wildcats scored one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead.  Julia Reuble plated a run in the first on a double to left field scoring Kailyn Campbell, and added a pair of unearned runs in the second and third on a passed ball and a fielding error.

After a WWU solo homerun in the fourth inning, the Wildcats scrapped together six runs in the fifth inning on three hits and a trio of WWU errors to take the 9-1 win.

All six of the CWU runs in the fifth came with two outs, with Kayla Ellis dealing the big blow of the inning on a bases loaded double that scored three runs.  Celine Fowler ended tings with a double down the left field line that scored Rachael Johnson and Ellis, enforcing the mercy rule.

Kiana Wood improved to 14-1 with the game one victory, going all five innings, allowing three hits while striking out four batters.

The tide turned in favor of the Vikings in game two where the Vikings hit three homeruns and tallied 13 hits to take the 9-0 shutout victory.  Western Washington scored three times in the third, four in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Vikings starting pitcher Anna Kasner improved to 10-5 on the season, earning the complete game shutout victory, allowing four hits with eight strikeouts.

Central Washington will next head to Billings, Mont. to take on Montana State Billings in a four-game series starting Friday, Apr. 14 at noon.
