The Central Washington University women's rugby team hosted the first annual CWU 7s tournament this past weekend. The Wildcats welcomed the Oregon Rugby Sports Union and the University of Washington in a round robin-style tournament.
In pool play, CWU squared off against the University of Washington's A and B sides. The Wildcats came away with a pair of victories, but lost to a talented ORSU team in a highly contested pool match.
The finals featured a rematch between ORSU and Central Washington. CWU was able to revenge their previous loss and was crowned tournament champions after defeating Oregon Rugby Sports Union, 33-5.
"It was great to see ORSU again in the final, because we were able to take lessons learned from earlier in the day, make those adjustments, and come back for a win," CWU head coach Mel Denham
said. "Each game we found small things to improve and build on from the previous. Overall, we had a lot of growth and learning throughout the afternoon, which is what we wanted to see building up to National's next weekend."
"This was the first of what will become an annual 7s tournament, and we are looking forward to grow it next year," Denham continued. "For now, we are focused on our preparation for USA Rugby College 7s Nationals. Our goal is to improve each day, and we will continue to do so leading up to the National Tournament."
The Wildcats will now prepare for the USA Rugby 7s College National Championship on May 20-21 in Glendale, Colo.
