For the second-straight summer, Central Washington Assistant Football Coach
Benny Boyd has been selected to be a member of the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship Program, and will spend over a week as a member of the Seattle Seahawks training camp staff starting in late July.
Â
This is Boyd's third time participating in the program dating back to 2010. In 2010, he worked with the Pittsburgh Steelers and in 2016 he spent training camp with the Oakland Raiders.
Â
Boyd will be working closely with the Seahawks Assistant Head Coach for Defense/Linebackers, Michael Barrow (with whom Boyd interned with in 2010), and Special Teams Coordinator Brian Schneider.
Â
"I am humbled and excited to again be selected to participate in the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship Program," Boyd said. "Having the opportunity to work with a top organization like the Seattle Seahawks will be extremely beneficial, not only for myself, but for the CWU Football program as well. I could not be more grateful."
Â
The Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship, designed to expose talented minority college coaches to the methods and philosophies of summer NFL training camps, was introduced to the league by Walsh in 1987 when he brought in a group of such coaches into his San Francisco 49ers training camp. The program has now grown to the point that every NFL team participates in it at every training camp. Last summer, a record 126 minority coaches were invited to NFL camps for planning and participating in practice sessions, working with players, and learning from coaches working at the highest level. In total, 26 of the 32 NFL teams currently have an active coach who participated in the internship at some point, with 2 being head coaches (Mike Tomlin & Marvin Lewis).
