MONMOUTH, Ore.- The Central Washington University volleyball team picked up another road win over a Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponent – the team's second of the season – with a 3-1 win (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) over Western Oregon University Saturday night at the Physical Education Building.
Central Washington moved to 7-4 overall on the season and 3-1 in GNAC play, while WOU dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in league matches.
Senior
Sabrina Wheelhouse led the Wildcats with 12 kills and a team-best .647 hitting percentage. Wheelhouse added four blocks and an assist to her stat line.
"Sabrina played well and helped us set the tone on offense," CWU head coach
Mario Andaya explained. "She worked hard to get the ball and really played to her strengths, physicality-wise. Both Sab and Sarah did a great job at the net and scored on the block and with key kills."
Senior
Sarah Joffs recorded a season-high nine kills, while hitting .444 and added three blocks and one dig.
Junior outside hitter
Shelby Mauritson notched her eighth straight double-digit kill effort with 11 kills on Saturday.
Bridgette Webb was two kills shy of notching double-digits, but finished the match with eight kills and a .312 hitting percentage.
Sophomore
Niki Cook led the offense with 24 assists and
Gabrielle Aihara added 13 assists on the night. Sophomore libero
Kyla Morgan posted her eighth straight 10-plus-dig effort, posting 15 digs in the match.
The first set was back-and-forth until Central Washington managed a 4-1 run to jump out to a 9-5 lead. The Wildcats continued to put pressure on the Wolves' defense for the remainder of the frame. Joffs finished the set with five kills and a .833 hitting percentage to propel CWU to a 25-17 set victory.
The Wildcats trailed 2-4 in the begging of the second frame, but kill by Wheelhouse sparked a 9-2 Wildcat run to jump out to an 11-2 advantage. Central Washington would lead for as many as 12 (22-11), but the Wolves battled back to close the gap to two (23-21). Back-to-back attack errors by the Wolves would close out the set 25-21 in the Wildcat's favor.
WOU used a 3-0 run to notch the third set at 13-13, and extended their lead to two following a pair of CWU attack errors. The score would be even three more times before the conclusion of the frame, but kills by Mauritson and Wheelhouse pushed the Wildcats to a 25-22 win.
Saturday's match was the Wildcats first sweep over a GNAC opponent this season.
The Wildcats will return home to face University of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
