SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Sept. 4) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell to Cal State San Bernardino, 2-1, in its final match of the California road trip.
The Wildcats fall to 0-2-0 on the season, while the Coyotes are 2-0-1.
Playing under the rising sun, rather than the mid-afternoon, the Wildcats' offense got a quick start when
Madison Bradley fired a shot that was stopped by Coyotes' keeper Destiny Collins in the third minute.
In the fourth minute, the Wildcats lost senior defensive midfielder
Karlee Goehner to injury.
"Losing Karlee had a sizeable impact on the dynamic we went into the game with," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said.
The Coyotes got their first shot in the eighth minute when Alyssa Campa's shot was kept out by sophomore keeper
Emily Holt.
Holt finished the match with seven saves.
The contest's first goal came in the ninth minute. Rachael Figg shot from the right side beat Holt and gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
San Bernardino got another chance in the 22
nd minute, but again Holt came up with the stop to keep the score at 1-0. Five minutes later, the Coyotes found the back of net on a strike from Alexia Gonzalez for a 2-0 advantage.
"We created chances for them and went down 2-0," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "Figg is a good forward and finished a good chance inside the box."
The Wildcats got a trio of chances in the 28
th, 34
th, and 35
th minutes on shots from
Emmi Seelbach,
Mackenzie Nolte, and
Whitney Lowe, but all three shots were rebuffed by Collins.
A flurry of late chances in the waning moments of the first half for the Coyotes were halted by the halftime whistle.
Central Washington got into the goal column in the 57
th minute.
Emily Minogue took a pass from Nolte on the right side and struck a shot that glanced off the post and over the goal line. The goal is Minogue's first collegiate marker.
"Second half we played better," Farrand added. "Minogue got her first collegiate goal, so that's a good milestone for her, she finished a nice ball from Mack."
Both sides worked up a few more chances in the second, but failed to find the back of the net. A pair of shots in under 10 seconds were levied against Holt in the 76
th minute, but both were turned aside by the Wildcats' keeper.
With time winding down, Seelbach took the game's final chance in the 86
th minute but her shot was blocked by a defender.
The Wildcats are back home against Northwest University on Thursday (Sept. 7) at 3:00 p.m. They also take on Stanislaus State University on Sunday (Sept. 10) at noon. Live stats and video will be available through CWU's Stretch Internet portal,
