Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Taylor Graham

No. 6 Concordia (Ore.) Slips Past Wildcats, 2-1

Ellensburg, Wash. (Oct. 13) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team (2-7-4, 2-4-2) played host to the No. 6 Concordia University (10-0-2, 7-0-1) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup. The Wildcats fell 2-1.

The Wildcats were looking to build off of their last-minute heroics from Thursday when they posted a 3-2 victory against Saint Martin's after a golden goal from senior midfielder Lexsi Manning. The Wildcats came out hot and dominated play in the opening minutes.

"I think it was a great response coming off the Saint Martin's game where we had some injuries and we had people shifted around a little bit, but I think we had a great game plan today," said CWU Head Coach Michael Farrand. "The first half pretty much exemplifies what we wanted to put in place today."

With the help of some great offensive play from freshman forward Makinzie Packwood and freshman midfielder Sydney Lowe, the Wildcats came out on the offensive and put up five shots in the first half and held Concordia to just four.

The Wildcats battled for 27 minutes before it finally paid off. After being awarded a free kick following a Cavs' foul, Olivia Olason sent a well-placed service into the box and an errant header from a Cavalier defender caromed over the Cavs' keeper and nestled into the net.

Following the own goal, the Wildcat offense went quiet with the exception of one shot on goal which was blocked by a Concordia defender. However, the Wildcats' defense held their line. The Wildcat defense knew what that goal meant and stepped up only allowing one shot from the Cavaliers which ended up being wide right. Heading into the half, the Wildcats had a one-to-mill lead and were playing some outstanding soccer against the best team in the conference.

The Wildcat defense held for the majority of the game until the 76th minute when Concordia midfielder Brenda Uribe placed a header in the back of the Wildcat net. Just one minute and ten seconds later, Karlie Hurley put a second goal in the back of the net to put the Cavaliers on top, 2-1. Central battled back hard but were unable to net the equalizer.

The Wildcat are back at it again at home on Thursday, October 18th when they face off against Montana State Billings. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Tomlinson Stadium.
