Seattle, Wash - The Central Washington University volleyball team wasted no time against Seattle Pacific as the Wildcats drubbed the Falcons 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) on Thursday night.
"We passed very well," head coach Mario Andaya said. "Kyla Morgan, Shelby Mauritson and Makala Swart got us into our system a lot on offense with good passing. Against a good blocking team like SPU you need to run your offense at a good pace and the passing is key. Gabrielle Aihara and Makenna Smith distributed very well from there. Madison Weg, Bridgette Webb and Sarah Joffs were huge on the block as well which was key. This is a good road win for sure."
The Wildcats (17-5, 11-4) got on the board first, as the Falcons (10-12, 8-7) were able to hang with the Wildcats throughout the early moments of the set. The Wildcats led 13-12, before breaking off a 12-4 run. The Wildcat defense was suffocating, forcing a .029 hitting percentage and nine attack errors from the Falcons. They added four blocks. The Wildcats earned the initial set 25-18.
The second set started with a speedy 5-0 lead for the Wildcats, as the Falcons used a timeout to halt the momentum. Again, the Wildcats stayed the course, extending their lead to 10-3. The Falcons fought their way back into the set, cutting the lead to three points. That's all the closer they would get, as the Wildcats used a 11-6 run to secure the second set 25-17. The Wildcat offense was their most efficient in the second set, converting on 15 kills on a .293 hitting percentage.
The Wildcats continued to hammer the Falcons after the break. The Wildcats led 11-9 before another monster 14-6 run propelled the squad to the sweep. They racked up another 15 kills while holding the Falcons to a .073 hitting percentage.
Mauritson and Swart were fabulous for the Wildcats, adding 14 kills a piece. Mauritson did so on a .448 hitting percentage, adding 11 digs and three blocks. Aihara assisted on 30 of the teams 44 kills. Joffs led the stifling Wildcat defense with seven blocks while Morgan led the Wildcats with 16 digs.
The Wildcats compete in their final road conference game on Saturday in Lacey, Washington. The Wildcats visit Saint Martin's at 7:00 p.m.
