thof the season for the Wildcats. They've won their last five matches by way of the sweep. In their previous encounter, the Yellowjackets stung the Wildcats in Billings 3-2. The Wildcats made sure they would not suffer the same fate on Thursday.
"Billings does a lot of creative stuff. They tip it around, can pass well and have big arms," head coach
Mario Andaya said. "We didn't find a lot of offense when we needed it at their place, we were inefficient and they caught us. Tonight, we found a way to transition well and score off our digs. We really made an effort to pick up some of their shots and deflections that they are so good at."
In the opening set, the score was 6-4 in favor of the Wildcats when they unleashed an 8-2.
Bridgette Webb got the offense going with a kill.
Shelby Mauritson followed with an ace. The score sat at 15-9 when the Wildcats went on another run. An attack error from the Yellowjackets was followed by a pair of Mauritson kills and another from
Madison Weg to make it 20-9. The Wildcats would go on to take the set 25-14.
Early parts of the middle set were even as the score landed tied at 10. Suddenly, the Wildcats score five unanswered points, highlighted by an ace from
Gabrielle Aihara. The Yellowjackets made it interesting before falling 25-21 to the Wildcats.
The third set belonged to the Wildcats. An ace from
Makala Swart capped a 6-0 run to open the set, forcing the Yellowjackets to call a timeout.
Sarah Joffs pounded home the kill that pushed the score to 15-7, as the Yellowjackets used their final timeout. Aihara snuck a kill over the net that helped aided the Wildcats in scoring the final eight points of the contest, taking the set 25-8.
Madison Weg was unreal for the Wildcats. She hammered home a game-high 13 kills on 17 attempts, notching a .765 hitting percentage for the night. Weg added five digs and two blocks for an incredible night. Muaritson tied for the game-high with 13 kills. Andaya credits the Aihara in setting her teammates up for success.
"Maddi and Shelby were fun to watch tonight," Andaya said. "There were some big swings out there. I thought this was one of Gabby's better games distributing the ball. At the same time, somebody has to put it away. Even out of system, Shelby is doing really good things right now. Maddi had a phenomenal night."
The Wildcats host the University of Alaska Anchorage in a pivitol Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Thursday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. inside Nicholson Pavilion.
