SCOUTING AZUSA PACIFIC
The Cougars are 2-2 on the season after pulling out a narrow victory over Cal State Los Angeles on Tuesday.
With the score tied at 78-78 and just four-tenths of a second left on the clock, Selom Mawugbe took in a full-court inbound pass from Jonathan Davis and converted the layup to lift the Cougars to victory.
Azusa Pacific has three players scoring in double digits. Mandrell Worthy leads the Cougars, averaging 15 points per game. Darien McClain (11.8) and Will Farris (10.3) sit behind Worthy in scoring. The Cougars are averaging just 69 points per game, over half of which comes from the above trio. They are allowing 74.5 points per game and have been out rebounded, on average, 44.3 to 35.
SCOUTING WESTMINSTER
The Griffins have yet to play a regular season game in 2018. Their opening game is slated for Friday at 7:00 p.m. against the Sodexo Classic host, Seattle Pacific. Westminster has lost both of its exhibitions to Brigham Young University and Utah Valley.
Travis Devashravee and Jake Connor led the Griffins against Utah Valley, scoring a dozen points each. Jai Jai Ely and Joonas Tahvainaien each notched 10 points. Westminster lost 96-71 to Utah Valley.
Against BYU, Westminster fell 72-43. Brandon Warr (12) and Jacob McCord (10) each eclipsed double digits in scoring. Westminster shot just 25.9 percent from the floor and were out rebounded 42-26.
Last season, the Griffins finished 21-5 overall and 17-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. They averaged 76.5 points per game and held opponents to just 67.9.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats split their contests last week, defeating Monterey Bay before falling in overtime to San Bernardino.
Central Washington picked up a 96-86 win over Cal State Monterey Bay to open the season. The Wildcats trailed early, 16-8, before Central opened a 12-0 run for a 20-16 advantage. Central finished the first half converting shots at a clip of 52.9 percent and made 84.6 percent of their free throws.
Malcolm Cola finished with a team-high 33 points and hauled in 13 rebounds, as well as one block and two steals.
Gamaun Boykin tallied 23 points, a team-high 15 rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal.
Central made good on second chances, picking up 21 second chance points and holding the Otters to just 12 second chance points. The Wildcats were lethal from close range, scoring 56 of their 96 points in the paint. They also out rebounded the Otters 47-36.
In their second game last week, the Wildcats fell to Cal State San Bernardino 87-83. Boykin drained a three at the buzzer to force overtime.
After tightly contested regulation play, the Crimson and Black nabbed the first lead of the overtime period, but a pair of free throws from San Bernardino leveled the score line again before Daytone Jennings knocked down a jumper for an 81-79 lead. Moments later, a layup from Cola brought CWU within one at 82-81. The Coyotes responded with a jumper of their own tp edge their lead to 84-81. Undeterred, Cola took a pass from
Matt Poquette and brought the Wildcats within one at 84-83. Another jumper from Jennings, and a free throw from Rhodes, put the game out of reach for the Wildcats.
