Women's Basketball Welcomes Holy Names

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Nov. 20) -- The Central Washington University women's basketball hosts Holy Names University in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday.

"Wednesday's game is another great opportunity to go out and take another step forward as a group," CWU Head Coach Randi Richardson-Thornley said. "We learned a lot from last weekend's game. We're excited to hit the floor against a good Holy Names team and see what we can learn this time. Our girls are ready and they know we need to come out and be our best." 
 
SCOUTING HOLY NAMES
The Hawks finished the 2017-2018 season with a 4-24 record on the year, including a 3-17 mark in PacWest play. Holy Names has gone 0-3 this season, falling to No. 6 Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, and Chico State.
 
Onjalise Carley-Hilliard leads the Hawks in scoring, averaging 16.3 points per game.  Ariana Hernandez is close behind at 13.3 points per game.  As a unit, the Hawks are shooting 38.7 percent from the field and just 26.2 percent from beyond the arc.  Holy Names is averaging 59.33 points per game and allowing 81.
 
Gernijah Martin sits atop the Hawks' leaderboard for rebounding, averaging six boards per game.  Of her 18 rebounds this season, six have come on offense.  Carley-Hilliard has reeled in 13 rebounds on the season, nearly half coming on the offensive side of the court.  Holy Names has been out rebounded by its opponents, on average, 41-31.

LAST TIME OUT
The Crimson and Black picked up a pair of wins last week over St. Cloud State (74-67) and Cal State San Bernardino (80-48).
 
The Wildcats came out hot and jumped to an early 10-4 lead with the help of nine points from Sadie Mensing in the first quarter against St. Cloud State. After going quiet from the field, the Wildcats allowed the Huskies to battle back. At the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats led 19-17. The Huskies picked up right where they left off and tied the game at 23-3 with six and a half minutes to play in the second quarter.  Central's offense got hot once more and, after a couple big shots from Mensing and Kaelie Flores, went into the half with the lead, 41-34.
 
After three quarters of play the Wildcats led the Huskies 59-50 thanks to 24 points in the paint and eight forced turnovers. Both Mensing and Malcolm had 15 points, followed by Flores who had 10 of her own. Central grabbed 20 rebounds through three quarters and had 18 assists as a team.
 
It was much the same on Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino.  Central came out of the gate hot going on a 22-8 run to begin the game. After a jumper from San Bernardino's Leaundra Walker-Brown, Flores started the Central scoring with a three from the top of the key to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. The Wildcats held the lead all the way through the first half increasing their lead to 23 points. Taylor Shaw led all scorers with 13 in the first half going five of eight from the field and three of four from behind the arc.  The Crimson and Black went into halftime with a 44-21 lead.
 
Central scored 40 points in the paint, 12 points off turnovers, 34 points from the bench, and collected 10 second chance points.  The Crimson and Black held San Bernardino to just 22 points in the paint, one second chance point, four points off turnovers, and the Coyotes' bench chipped in 26 points.
 
The Wildcats finished with four players in double digits, led by Kassidy Malcolm (16).  While Shaw (13), Brianna Phiakhamngon (12), and Flores (11) also eclipsed 10 points.
