Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wildcats Fall in OT to Dominguez Hills, 86-83

Carson, Calif. (Dec. 17) - The Central Washington University women's basketball team played their final non-conference game of the regular season as they took on Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Wildcats held a lead throughout the middle of the game, but were outlasted 86-83 by the Toros in overtime inside the Torodome on Monday.

The night was filled with clutch shots for both the Wildcats and the Toros. The Wildcats forced a turnover with just eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as they trailed 74-72. Kaelie Flores attacked the basket, scoring a layup with just one second left in the game. The Toros were able to heave a shot at the rim, but the game went into overtime.

Again, the Wildcats trailed by two points with 1:07 left in the first overtime. Brianna Phiakhamngon missed a layup, yet JonNae Richardson corralled an offensive rebound. Richardson put up another shot and through contact made the basket. She converted the three-point play, giving the Wildcats an 83-82 lead with 54 seconds left in the first overtime. The Toros' Destinee Williams hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds left, taking an 85-83 lead. The Toros were able to hang on for the narrow win.

"We had our opportunities in this game to put it away but didn't value possessions as well as we should have in the 3rd quarter," head coach Randi Richardson-Thornley said. "Yes the game came down to some final plays but really we lost our opportunity to get a good win on the road earlier. This one hurts because we all know we could of been better. But credit to Dominguez Hill on taking advantage of their opportunities and executing down the stretch."

The Wildcats had a better shooting night than the Toros in all but one category. The Wildcats made 44.7 percent of their shots to the Toros 37.2 percent. The Wildcats also connected on seven three-pointers, led by Taylor Shaw who had four. The Toros were only abel to hit three three-point shot, none bigger than the eventual game winner by Williams. The Toros were able to create their separation at the free-throw line. The team went 25-for-44 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats only earned eight points at the charity stripe.

Offensively, the Wildcats had five players score in double figures. Flores led the group with 19 points, adding nine rebounds and five assists. Richardson may have had the best all-around night for the Wildcats. She had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Shaw and Sadie Mensing added 14 points of their own. Alexis Pana scored 11 points with six rebounds and five assists.

The Wildcats return to the court on January 3. The team travels to Monmouth, Oregon to take on Western Oregon at 7:00 p.m.
