ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Central Washington University men's basketball team came into Saturday's matchup with Alaska Anchorage as one of the conference's hottest teams, but a cold shooting nigh brought the Wildcats six-game winning streak to an end with the Seawolves capturing a 70-54 victory.
The loss drops CWU to 14-9 on the season, and 9-7 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Alaska Anchorage improves to 12-11, 8-8 in the GNAC.
Central Washington struggled from the field throughout the length of the game, making 19 of 59 shots from the field (32.2-Percent), including 3 of 19 from three. The Wildcats did take advantage of a large rebounding advantage, grabbing 41 missed shots in the game, including 20 on the offensive end that turned into 17 points.
Cameron Williams led the Wildcats with 13 points off the bench, making 5 of 8 shots and grabbing eight rebounds.
Fuquan Niles was a rebound away from a double-double scoring 10 points to go along with his nine boards.
The Wildcats started the game off cold, missing their first five shots in the game to trail Alaska 7-1 five minutes into the game.
Sage Woodruff came off the bench and got things going for the Wildcats connecting on a three followed by a basket by
Jerome Bryant. However, the Wildcats missed its next five shots and found itself down 19-7 with under eight minutes to go in the half.
Williams knocked down a couple of shots and Niles tipped in another as CWU pulled to within six at 19-13. The duo of Niles and Williams continued to give life to the Wildcats offense, scoring 14 of the team's final 16 points of the half, where CWU trailed the Seawolves 23-33.
The difference in the half came from the three-point line where the Seawolves connected on 6 of 13 shots, while the Wildcats were just 1 of 7.
The cold shooting continued in the second half as the Wildcats missed nine of their first 11 shots and trailed 34-50 with 11:41 to play.
Central Washington shot 30.6-percent in the half and trailed by as many as 23 points, ending with the final 54-70 margin.
Josiah Woods led all scorers with 19 points for the Seawolves on 6 of 10 shooting, Malik Clements followed with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats play their final home games of the season next week when they host Concordia and Western Oregon on Feb. 15 and 17, respectively.
