Williams Pitches Wildcats to Split with Vulcans

HONOLULU, Hawaii --The Central Washington University softball team split its opening pair of games in Hawaii, losing game one 1-9 in six innings to Hawaii Hilo, followed by a 7-4 victory in game two.

Central now sits at 4-3 on the season while the Vulcans move to 9-4

Taylor Williams got her first win of the season in game two, hurling the final five innings giving up just three hits and now runs.  Williams entered in the second with the score knotted at 3-3 and worked the Wildcats out of a jam surrendering one inherited run.

Celine Fowler led the Wildcats with three hits on the day, going 3 for 6 with a run scored and a RBI.  Paige Liikala got the start in game two and went 2 for 3 with two runs scored while Jacie McDaniels and Savannah Egbert each had two hits on the day.

Game 1 | 1-9 Loss

The Wildcats jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning thanks to a pair of two-out singles by McDaniels and Julia Reuble, followed by a RBI double by Katie Kastning.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats totaled just one hit in the next five innings as Vulcan starting pitcher increased her undefeated record to 7-0.

Game 2 | 7-4 Win

Again, CWU scored in the first inning, this time on a sacrifice fly by Reuble that plated Egbert from third base.  Unlike game one, the CWU offense kept pressure on Hawaii Hilo, scoring twice in the second on a bases loaded walk by Egbert and a sac fly by Fowler to take a 3-2 lead.

The Vulcan offense regained the lead (4-3) in the third inning brining around two runs.

Molly Nutt got the Wildcats started in the fourth inning with a leadoff single.  Central loaded the bases with one out, and after a bases loaded walk Alycia Bannan brought in two runs on a single though the left side, giving CWU a 6-4 advantage.

The Wildcats pieced together an insurance run in the fifth thanks to a leadoff double by Paige Liikala who eventually scored on a groundout by Rachael Johnson to give Central the final 7-4 lead.

Central Washington returns to action tomorrow when they face Hawaii Pacific at 2 and 4 p.m.
