Las Vegas, Nev. – The Central Washington University softball team swept its double-header at the MSUB Desert Stinger Saturday, defeating San Francisico State 9-1 in the opener followed by a 9-6 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the nightcap.
The Wildcats are now 3-1 on the season after splitting its two games yesterday, while the Gators fall to 0-4 on the season and the 15
th ranked Otters move to 2-2.
Savannah Egbert continued her hot-start to the season, finishing the day 4 for 8 with four runs scored and two RBI.
Alycia Bannan saw her first action of her career and collected three hits including a solo homerun in game two.
Jacie McDaniels,
Samantha Gorham and
Theresa Moyle each tallied two safeties on the day, with Gorham and McDaniels each driving in a pair of runs.
Kayla Smith picked up her first win of the season (1-0), going all six innings in game one, allowing just one unearned run and four hits to go along with six strikeouts.
Strasser notched her second win (2-1) in the night cap, going the distance allowing just three earned runs with three k's.
Katie Kastning got things going for the Wildcats in game one with a double to right center scoring
Rachael Johnson who singled two pitches earlier to give CWU a 1-0 lead. After the Gators tied the game in the top of the second, CWU erupted for five runs in the second highlighted by a bases clearing double to give the Wildcats a 5-1 advantage.
The Wildcats cruised to the 9-1 victory with Smith allowing just three base runners in the final four innings to force the mercy rule in the 6
th.
In game two, Moyle got the Wildcats rolling with a two-run double in the first inning, plating McDaniels and
Celine Fowler as Central jumped ahead 3-0.
Cal State Monterey Bay took advantage of defensive miscues by the Wildcats to tie the game heading into the bottom half of the second.
The Wildcats returned the favor by using two CSUMB errors to produce three more runs to take back the three-run advantage at 6-3.
A McDaniels double in the 4
th, coupled with a Bannan's solo homerun in the 5
th gave the Wildcats a 9-4 lead. Another CWU error allowed the Otters to add two more in the 7
th, but Strasser shut down the rally by forcing her 11
th groundout of the contest to end the game.
The Wildcats wrap up the 2018 Desert Stinger tomorrow, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. against the Academy of Art.
