ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Mar. 10) – The Central Washington University (11-5, 5-0 GNAC) swept its Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against Concordia University (Ore.) (2-14, 1-5) by scores of 12-7 and 6-1.
"We continued what we did last week," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said afterward. "Our pitching looked great and our bats continued to stay hot from last week. We put up crooked numbers in multiple innings. It's a good start to the weekend and a good way to open up at home."
Griffin Davis (3-1) nabbed his third win of the season, tossing 5.2 innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, and six strikeouts.
Offensively, the Wildcats have five players with multiple hits.
Justin Hampson finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
James Smith III drove in a pair, scored once, and collected three hits.
Ty Deckwa,
Dustin Braun,
Michael Heinevetter,
Jaden Hassell, and
Christopher Dalto each recorded an RBI.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a pair of sacrifice flies and a single.
The Wildcats mounted a four-run third inning to bring the game even. The scoring started with a single from Braun, scoring one run, before a double from Smith brought home Deckwa and Lesmeister. Heinevetter then hit a sac fly, scoring Braun.
A single from Deckwa in the fourth scored both Hampson and
Jesse Unger, giving the Wildcats a 6-4 lead.
Hampson gave the Wildcats a bit more breathing room in the fifth, slipping a single through the left side for a pair of RBIs.
The Cavaliers got one back in the sixth, cutting the Wildcat lead to 8-5.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats' offense struck again. Hassell pulled a single through the left side, allowing Braun to score from second. An error in the outfield allowed Heinevetter to score from first, giving Central a 10-5 advantage. Hampson followed suit with another single through the left side, scoring Hassell.
The Cavaliers tallied once in the seventh and once in the eighth, pulling closer at 11-7.
The final Wildcat run came on a tower solo homerun from Dalto in the bottom of the eighth.
Connor Stevenson went the distance in game two, completing his third consecutive start. The right-hander allowed just one run on five hits. He struck out four hitters.
Seven different Wildcats collected hits, while Lesmeister, Braun, Heinevetter, Dalto, and
Michael Peter recorded an RBI.
All was quiet until the fourth inning, when Braun sent a laser over the left center field wall, giving Central a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Heinevetter singled into left, scoring Smith. Dalto then hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in Heinevetter. The Wildcats weren't quite done in the fourth. Lesmeister took an 0-1 pitch to center field where a diving Mitch Bevacqua couldn't make the grab. The ball rolled to the fence, allowing both
Yi-Fan Pan and Hassell to score, and giving Lesmeister a triple for a 5-0 lead.
The Cavaliers got on run back in the fifth on a single, but a bases loaded walk to Peter in the sixth put the Wildcats back up by five.
The Wildcats are back in action tomorrow (Mar. 11) for another GNAC doubleheader against Concordia. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
