Wildcats Host Wolves in Early Battle For GNAC Supremacy

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Mar. 16) – The Central Washington University baseball team takes on Western Oregon University for a four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference series.

"Western Oregon is a good team," CWU Head Coach Desi Storey said.  "It'll be a tough series between two good teams.  We need to stay consistent and keep executing the way we have been over the past two weekends."
 
SCOUTING WESTERN OREGON
The Wolves are just a game behind the Wildcats in the GNAC standings.  After two series of conference action, Western Oregon is 6-2.  Overall, however, the Wolves are just 6-9 with a road record of 2-6.  The Wolves split last weekend against Montana State Billings, dropping a pair of tight games.
 
The Wolves are hitting at a clip of .258 on the season but have struggled against right handers, showing an average of .225.  Jacob Martinez leads the Wolves' offense, sitting atop the Wolves' statistics with an average of .321.  He has five extra base hits and three stolen bases.  He has also worked 10 walks.  Connor McCord (.308) and Nyles Nygaard (.304) lead the Wolves with five homeruns.  Nygaard has driven in 18 runs, while McCord has brought in 17.
 
On the mound, Craig Grubbe leads the Wolves' starters with a 3.86 earned run average.  In four games, three starts, Grubbe has posted a 1-2 record over 18.2 innings.  He has struck out 13 hitters.  Kolby Bales has appeared in four games and hurled 7.1 shutout innings.  Bales has allowed just four hits and one walk.
 
Overall, the Wolves have a team ERA of 5.09.  Opponents hold a .251 batting average against the Wolves' pitching staff.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats took three from Concordia last weekend.  James Smith III was selected as the GNAC Player of the Week.  The Wildcats' bats came alive for an 11-run inning in the fourth inning of game three. 
 
A throwing error allowed Jaden Hassell to score, starting the scoring.  Hampson then roped a triple to center, scoring a pair.  Lesmeister followed with a double, bringing home Hampson.  Deckwa strung the third consecutive extra base, run scoring hit together with a double down the right field line to score Lesmeister.  Smith then doubled down the right field line, scoring Deckwa. 
 
A bases loaded walk later in the inning allowed Dustin Braun to score.  Dalto then singled to right, scoring Smith.  A wild pitch allowed Heinevetter to score, before Hampson recorded an RBI ground out.  Dalto then scored on a passed ball, staking out a 14-1 advantage.
 
A strong showing in the first two series of conference play has placed the Wildcats atop the GNAC standings.
