ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Apr. 14) – Griffin Davis led the Central Washington University baseball team to a 4-2 victory over Saint Martin's University in the backend of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Wildcats dropped game one 18-10.
The series was initially scheduled to be played in Lacey, Washington, but weather forced the series to move to Ellensburg. Saint Martin's is playing as the home team for the series.
"Grif [Davis] had a stellar outing, that's two straight for him," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "He controlled the zone and limited what they could do on offense. In game two we played to our capabilities, it's what we need to do every game."
The Saints offense scored in four consecutive from the third through the sixth, after scoring one in the first. They added another singular run in the eighth, but the middle innings saw all crooked numbers.
Dustin Braun opened the Wildcats' scoring in the first with a single up the middle to score
Ty Deckwa.
Christopher Dalto knocked in three runs in the series opener. He hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth, a solo homerun in the sixth, and he doubled in a run in the eighth.
After Dalto's sacrifice fly in the fourth,
Tristin Parton roped one of his two doubles in the game, driving in
Jaden Hassell.
Michael Peter drove in Hassell in the eighth with a single through the right side, before Deckwa hit into an RBI groundout.
Yi-an Pan later doubled both Peter and
Michael Heinevetter home.
James Smith III then singled home Yi-an.
Connor Stevenson (5-4) was charged with the loss. He allowed eight runs over four innings. Clark Streby (4-3) earned the win, allowing four earned runs over six innings.
Griffin Davis (4-5) outdueled Tanner Inouye (2-3) in game two. Davis went 5.1 innings, allowed two runs on five hits, and struck out five. Inouye went six innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, and struck out five.
Parton got the scoring started early, driving in Deckwa in the top of the first with a single.
A balk in the bottom of the first allowed the Saints to score their first run of the game, tying the score at 1-1.
Justin Hampson had an RBI groundout in the second, giving CWU a 2-1 advantage.
Dustin Braun gave Central a bit of breathing room in the fifth, doubling home Hampson for a 3-1 lead.
After an RBI fielder's choice for Saint Martin's in the fifth, cutting the score to 3-2, Braun worked his magic a second time. A single through the left side brought Hampson around and gave the Wildcats a 4-2 lead.
Tyler Hoefer worked 0.2 innings in relief, striking out both hitters he faced. He threw just seven pitches, one away from an immaculate outing.
Jacob Forrester closed the door for his first save of the season.
The Wildcats are back in action tomorrow (Apr. 15) for another doubleheader against Saint Martin's. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
