Irvine, Calif. - An efficient attack from the Central Washington University volleyball team helped them open the weekend right, sweeping Notre Dame de Namur 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-17) on Friday morning.
As a team, the Wildcats (3-1) converted on .323 percent of their attacks against the Agros (1-4). Shelby Mauritson, Makala Swart and Madison Weg led the attack for the Wildcats. Mauritson led all players with 17 kills. Swart smashed home 12 attacks, finishing with a hitting percentage of .364. Weg completed the match with nine kills. The Wildcats made good on 52 kills, 18 more than their opponents. Gabrielle Aihara assisted on 43 of those 52 kills.
"We stayed in rallies and defended well," head coach Mario Andaya said. "We converted pretty well and got a lot of kills. Gabby did a good job of distributing and giving our hitters a chance to score."
In the opening set, the Wildcats jumped out to an early 12-4 lead before the Agros were able to pull within one, as the score sat 24-23. A kill from Weg gave the Wildcats the 25-23 set win. A 10-5 run during the middle of the second set aided the Wildcats to a 25-15 set win going into the break. Another quick start got the Wildcats a 7-3 lead in the third set. They would go on to complete the sweep 25-17.
Defensively, the Wildcats held the Agros to a .165 hitting percentage. Julia Mellander had four total blocks. Kyla Morgan put in a solid performance with 10 digs.
The Wildcats are back in action tonight at 7:45 p.m. as they take on CSU San Marcos.
