Wildcats Complete California Sweep

Irvine, Calif - The Central Washington University volleyball team completed the California sweep against CSU East Bay, as the Wildcats pounded the Pioneers 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13) on Saturday night. 

"To go 4-0 feels pretty good," head coach Mario Andaya said. "The team competed very well this weekend and that was the goal.  We got better this weekend so it was a success." 

The Wildcats (6-1) took advantage of a hot start against the Pioneers (4-4), jumping out to a 7-3 lead. They'd go on to win the first set 25-20. The two teams traded points in the second set. the score was tied at 12 before the Pioneers ripped off a small 3-0 run, to take a 15-12 lead. They'd go on to win 25-22. The Wildcats jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the third set. The Pioneers fought back, but the Wildcats took the game 25-22. A massive 15-4 run to open the fourth set aided the Wildcats to a 25-13 set win. 

Four Wildcats finished with double-figure kills. Shelby Mauritson led all players with 19 kills, while adding 10 digs to cap off a fabulous weekend. The senior finished with 65 kills and 53 digs in 14 sets on the weekend. Makala Swart accumulated 15 kills. Madison Weg and Sarah Joffs added 10 kills each. Joffs made the most of her opportunities, finishing the night with a .571 hitting percentage.

"Kyla, Makala and Shelby were solid passing which is critical to scoring points," Andaya said. "Maddy made a ton of plays for us this weekend and is becoming a good defender which is a new role for her. Overall a fun weekend." 

The Wildcats open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday, as they take a trip to the last frontier to face Alaska Fairbanks at 7:00 p.m.
