Game Recap: Football |

Wildcats Reign as King of Burnaby Mountain, Topple SFU 63-10

BURNABY, B.C. (Sept. 22) – On a day that looked more fitting for a scene from a Stephen King novel, rather than a football game, the Central Washington University football team (3-1, 3-0) routed Simon Fraser University (1-3, 0-2), 63-10.

The Wildcats have now scored 50 or more points against Simon Fraser in their last three meetings, twice going over 60.

Reilly Hennessey scampered into the end zone on a fourth and short in the Wildcats' first drive of the game.  Colin Manners added the point after for a 7-0 CWU lead.  Hennessey finished 16-for-23 with 263 passing yards.

Michael Roots found the end zone with 5:26 on the board in the first quarter on an eight-yard carry.  Manners added the PAT for a 14-0 advantage.  Roots had a monster day, picking up 186 yards on the ground.

Simon Fraser aimed to tack their first points on the board late in the first quarter with a field goal, but the CWU special teams unit had other ideas.  Metselaar's kick was blocked by Chase Demoor, preserving the 14-0 lead.

Not even Jack Torrance at the Overlook Hotel would have been able to stop Christian Cummings, as he tallied a trio of rushing touchdowns. Cummings barreled his way into the end zone with a 10-yard rush early in the second quarter, giving CWU a 21-0 lead after Manners' PAT.

Late in the second quarter the Wildcats struck again.  Hennessey handed the ball off to Roots, who shoveled it over the defense to a wide open Winterhawk Leighton for both Roots' first touchdown pass of his career and Leighton's first touchdown catch.  Manners added the PAT for a 28-0 lead.

Simon Fraser added a touchdown, but the Wildcats responded with Cummings' second touchdown rush of the day for a 35-7 lead.

The Clan added a field goal at the end of the half, bringing the score to 35-10.

In the first half, the CWU defense held Simon Fraser to just 42 rushing yards on 11 carries. They held Simon Fraser to a total of 65 yards on the ground for the game.

Hennessey got his second rushing touchdown of the game in the third quarter.  The senior signal caller eluded the defense on a five-yard carry and the PAT made it 42-10.

He later found Samuel Sanchez on a 38-yard touchdown pass, giving Central a 49-10 lead.

With 7:33 left in the third quarter, BJ Hawthorne intercepted a pass from Justin Seiber.  It is the first interception of the season for Hawthorne.  He added three tackles (2S-1A=3T) and was in on one sack as well.

Cummings rumbled into the end zone for a third time in the fourth, giving the Wildcats a 56-10 lead.  Christian Moore found Kyler Ooley for a late touchdown, pushing the margin to 63-10 after Chandler Woolley added his second PAT.

Central Washington finished with 315 yards gained on the ground, surpassing the 286 gained through their aerial assault.  The offensive line kept Hennessey and Moore out of trouble in the pocket, while opening running lanes for their backs all night.

The Wildcats are at home under the lights for the first time at Tomlinson Stadium next weekend.  They take on West Texas A&M at 6:00 p.m.
