ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 27) – Lexsi Manning and
Sydney Lowe hit the crossbar, but the Central Washington University women's soccer team (1-4-3, 1-1-1) played to a 0-0 draw against Western Oregon University (4-3-2, 2-1-1).
"I think we put ourselves in a position to win, definitely," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We had some real clear chances. When you count the balls off the post, got called back from offside, or the balls that were near misses we had some real chances to settle the game out and play a bit. I think overall for our defense that's one of the better games for them. We have to go chance points and go chase Simon Fraser now. It's a tough place to play, but we have to go up there and find three points. We have to keep ourselves in the thick of things because conference play runs out really quick."
All was quiet for the first 15 minutes, save for a few fouls and an offside call against Western Oregon, until the Wildcats worked a corner in the 16
th minute.
Jordan Engman's corner generated a shot from Lowe, but she fired it over the bar.
Makinzie Packwood fired a shot goalward in the 22
nd minute, but it was kept out by Alex Qualls.
The Wolves got their first shot of the contest in the 25
th minute from Alyssa Tomasini, but she sent it wide.
Engman let a shot go less than 60 seconds later, but it was blocked by a defender.
The Wolves first corner kick of the game came in the 28
th minute, generating a shot from Kennedy Clay, but
Emily Thomson snuffed out the scoring opportunity.
In the 42
nd minute,
Sophia Keenan fired a shot wide. She was followed in the 43
rd minute with a shot from Packwood, which was turned aside by Qualls.
KK Wallace found a scoring chance in the 44
th minute, but again Qualls came to the rescue.
Wallace put a headed effort on frame in the 49
th minute, forcing Qualls to make another save.
Both offenses went fairly quiet in the second half, until
Lexsi Manning lined up for a free kick in the 87
th minute. Manning blasted a free kick from range that rung the crossbar, keeping the score level at 0-0.
After 90 minutes of 0-0 soccer, the match went to extra time. The first overtime period saw just one shot, a headed effort from Western Oregon's Isabelle Creighton that Thomson turned aside, and no goals.
Paige Devine generated one shot in the second extra period, but it was blocked by a defender. Western Oregon received a corner in the 108
th minute, generating a header from Chelsea Hartnett that went wide.
The Wildcats travel to Burnaby, B.C. for a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
