Wildcats Fall 1-0 in Tight Battle With Simon Fraser

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 29) -- The Central Washington Wildcats women's soccer team (1-5-3, 1-2-1) traveled north of the boarder to play visitor in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup with Simon Fraser University (6-3-0, 4-1-0).

Fresh off a zero to zero draw with Western Oregon University earlier in the week, the Wildcats were looking for a little bit more offense in this matchup. Head coach Michael Farrand touched on the opportunities that were there but just not quite capitalized on in their matchup with WOU and was a focus point for the Wildcats looking ahead to Simon Fraser.

"It was an awesome game," CWU Head Coach Michael Farrand said afterward.  "It's a very good response to our tie on Thursday, just two teams battling.  It was another frustrating day offensively as we had another goal called back today, but we had some great chances including a ball cleared off the line.  We battled all 90 minutes.  It was our most complete game to date."

CWU had its first opportunity early in the first half at the ten-minute mark when freshman Makinzie Packwood made the first real run on the Clan's goal. After breaking away from the last defender, Packwood was deterred from a goal by a daring challenge from SFU freshman keeper Nicole Anderson.

This Wildcats' offense went quiet until the 50th minute when a careless turnover by SFU in their own box opened up an opportunity.  After a pristine pass from Freshman midfielder Sydney Lowe to sophomore fowrd Madison Bradley, the Wildcats were turned away from their early second half opportunity.

SFU on the other hand, was fresh off of a big conference win against Seattle Pacific University in golden goal overtime earlier in the week. The Clan continued their solid offensive play throughout the first half but only capitalized on one of their opportunities in the second half.

In the 49th minute, fresh out of halftime, SFU forward Teagan MacKay shot out across the 18 yard-box and launched a precise pass to senior midfielder Jenna-lee Baxter who put the ball in the back of the net to notch her fourth goal of the season.

The Central Washington Wildcat soccer team is home for four days until they hit the road to Nampa, Idaho to play visitor to Northwest Nazarene in another GNAC matchup on October 4th. The Wildcats look forward to tweaking a couple things to come out and give a strong showing against the Nighthawks.
