Lowe Scoring Game Ends in 1-1 Draw

PORTLAND, Ore. --  Sydney Lowe scored the equalizing goal for the Central Washington University women's soccer team as they played to a draw against Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Concordia University (Ore.).

The Cavaliers (2-7-1, 0-3-1) scored in the eighth minute, but the Wildcats (4-4-1, 2-1-1) were able to level the score line just minutes later.  Neither team found the back of the net afterward, forcing extra time.

"Got off the ground fairly slow and got punished for it," CWU Head Coach Michael Farrand said afterward.  "We responded really well.  Syd got free and fired a really nice ball over the keeper's head.  We battled back and forth all night.  Concordia had a few corners, but we were able to keep them from doing damage.  In the second half, both teams cancelled each other out.  In overtime, Liv had a really nice shot and the keeper was able to make the save.  We nearly won the game at the end of overtime.  It's always a tough battle down there, so I'm happy with our performance. Concordia is a much better team than their record reflects and it's going to be an absolute battle to see who makes the conference tournament."

Kyra Radcliffe gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 advantage in the eighth minute.  Haley Leavens found Radcliffe on the right side of the box, where Radcliffe fired home a shot from close range.

Central wasted no time finding the equalizer.  The Wildcats unleashed a cannonade of shots in the 12th minute.  Lowe's initial shot from the top of the box was blocked, before Madison Hinkel snatched it up and blasted a shot towards goal, but her shot met a defender as well.  The third shot was the charm for the Wildcats, as Lowe fired home her chance from the top of the 18.

Lowe nearly buried a go-ahead marker in the 19th minute.  Her shot from the top of the box was parried by Hailey Asato, keeping the game level at 1-1.  Sophia Keenan had the Wildcats' next chance in the 25th minute.  Asato came to her side's rescue once more.

A shot from Concordia's Brenda Uribe rung off the crossbar in the 34th minute, narrowly avoiding another Concordia lead.

Emily Thomson was called on in the 44th minute as time waned in the first half, she kept a shot from Emily Boettcher out to preserve the level pegging.

Concordia's Isabelle Morales was first on the shot chart in the second half.  Thomson parried the shot, leading to a Cavalier corner.  Off the ensuing corner, Uribe was called for a foul on Thomson and turned possession over to Central.

In the 52nd minute, Peyton Vogel aimed to break the deadlocked score but Asato had other plans.  Asato parried the freshman forward's offer at goal and was called on two minutes later to turn aside a chance from Bella Brown.  Sandwiched in between the two Wildcat shots, Morales fired a shot on goal but Thomson made the save.

Both sides struggled to get off clean shots until the 74th minute when Keenan sent a shot goalwards.   Her effort from the top of the box was met by Asato again.  In the 77th minute, Boettcher blasted a shot on goal which was met once more by Thomson.

After 90 minutes of play, and neither team being able to find the go-ahead goal, it was off to golden goal extra time.

The Cavaliers' first chance on goal in extra time came on a shot from Jaida Nyby in the 96th minute.  Thomson made the stop, leading to a Wildcat counterattack.  Hinkel fired a shot off the counterattack and it rung the post.

In the second overtime period, Olivia Sloan nearly missed sending the Wildcats home with a victory.  Her shot was stopped by Asato to keep the game at 1-1.  The Cavaliers had four shots in the second overtime period, but none made it on frame.

After 110 minutes of play, Concordia totaled 20 shots to Central's 13.  The Wildcats, however, had seven shots on goal to the Cavaliers' six.

Central Washington is back in action on Thursday (Oct. 17) as the Wildcats host Simon Fraser University in Tomlinson Stadium at 3:00 p.m.
