ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell in a rain-soaked battle with Seattle Pacific (8-5-0, 6-1-0), 1-0, in overtime.
The Wildcats (5-5-1, 3-2-1) were coming off a 3-2 victory over Simon Fraser University and aimed to keep the momentum going.
Teanna Lathum nearly broke the deadlock early. She found herself on a breakaway in the 12
th minute and slid her shot toward the far post, careening off the framework to keep the game at 0-0.
Sophia Chilzuk fired a chance towards
Emily Thomson in the 21
st minute, but the junior keeper turned the shot aside for her first save of the first half. Thomson was tested again in the 23
rd minute on a shot from Chloe Gellhaus, but once again Thomson made the save.
Central Washington had consecutive chances from
Sophia Keenan around the half-hour mark, but both of her shots missed the frame.
After 45 minutes, the contest was still tied at 0-0.
Seattle Pacific held the Wildcats in their own half for the beginning of the second half. The Falcons generated three shots before the 52
nd minute, including a shot from Mariah Alexander which was stopped by Thomson.
In the 75
th minute of play, Thomson was called on again. This time, a shot from Claire Neder was parried by the Wildcats' keeper.
The Wildcats' first chance at goal in the second half came in the 85
th minute. Keenan blasted a shot from the top of the 18 and sent it whistling past the far upper corner of the net.
Kylee Dillon added another shot in the 90
th minute, but was unable to twist it on frame.
Regulation ended with the score still deadlocked at 0-0.
It didn't take long for Seattle Pacific to find the golden goal winner. Just 1:54 into the first overtime period, a service into the six was parried by Thomson. The ensuing rebound caromed to the middle of the box, where Megan Moore was waiting. She buried the shot as the Wildcats attempted to recover, sending Seattle Pacific home with a 1-0 victory.
"It's been a great week for us," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said afterward. "We came back against Simon when we weren't play well and put our game together. I'm just really proud of the girls. We had a week where we had to make some changes tactically and in the lineup. You saw us take some things away from Seattle Pacific that some other teams haven't. I thought the first half was a really even first half, but in the second I think we got pinned back for a while. We were able to grow the game out and finished really well. I think we were all wishing that Soph's [Keenan] shot was going to go in. We mishandled a ball in overtime and they buried it. They're going to finish any ball that gets left out and they did."
The Falcons outshot the Wildcats 22-6 and had seven shots on goal. Thomson finished with six saves on the evening. Keenan and Lathum had three and two shots each, respectively. Dillon had one shot for the Crimson and Black.
Central Washington is back in action next Thursday (Oct. 24) as they travel to Nampa, Idaho for a GNAC matchup against Northwest Nazarene. The Wildcats are then back at home on Saturday (Oct. 26) to host rival Western Washington.
