ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University volleyball program celebrated the careers of
Kyla Morgan,
Bridgette Webb and
Gabrielle Aihara prior to first serve against Simon Fraser. The trio were sent out of Nicholson Pavilion on the right note, as the Wildcats dominated the Clan 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-11) on Saturday night.
Morgan added to an already stellar resume from her time with Central Washington volleyball. Morgan entered Saturday's contest with 2,311 career digs. Seattle Pacific's Anna Herold (2008-11) sat in third-place all-time in the Great Northwest Athletic conference with 2,316 career digs. Morgan would take the spot from Herold with her sixth dig of the night, moving her into third all-time in the conference in career digs. Morgan finished the match with 22 digs as her career total climbed to 2,333.
"I'm just very thankful for Coach Mario [Andaya] and Chloe [Solum] for allowing me to play here and get that many digs," Morgan said. "Through all of my four years, they've believed in me and meant so much. I'm very proud of achieving that mark and I'm very thankful to have great coaches."
Webb joined the Wildcats in 2015. She appeared in 102 matches and has played 340 sets for the Wildcats. After tonight's match, Webb totaled 682 career kills, 289 total blocks and 151 career digs. Webb was named GNAC Honorable Mention last season. Away from the court, Webb has appeared on the GNAC All-Academic team three times.
Aihara joined the team in 2016. She appeared in 114 matches and has played in 428 sets. Aihara has recorded more than 500 assists in every season with the team, including 1,147 assists during her junior season. Aihara's totals sit at 3,243 career assists. She ranks 16th all-time in the GNAC.
"Kyla [Morgan], Gaby [Aihara] and Bridge [Webb] are Wildcat volleyball," CWU Head Coach
Mario Andaya said. "They define it. What they've accomplished as players and at this institution is ideal. They are model kids. We couldn't be happier for them."
From the moment the first serve was launched, the Wildcats (18-10, 13-7 GNAC) dominated the Clan (17-11, 13-7 GNAC) in their regular season finale. The Wildcats smothered the Clan's offense, holding them to a -.058 hitting percentage for the match. The Clan were only able to muster 19 kills over the three sets of action.
"I thought we did a really good job defensively against Simon Fraser," Coach Andaya stated. "Simon Fraser can cause a lot of problems. They are big, they have good arms and they play really good defense. I thought we matched the defensive effort that both sides were giving and we found some more offense."
The Wildcats hammered 36 kills, dished out 34 assists and scooped up 69 digs. Double-figures separated the two teams in each of those categories.
"The team played absolutely amazing," Morgan said. "It was nice to end on a very good note. Bridgette [Webb] and Gaby [Aihara] were so level-headed tonight. I thought
Sierra Sharma played very well. She hit awesome. I was very proud of the team as a whole."
Each set featured monster runs from the Wildcats. They opened the match by jumping out to a 10-1 lead over the Clan. They'd cruise to a 25-13 opening set win.
The second set was even better for the Wildcats. The Wildcats lead ballooned to 18-4 during the set. The Wildcats would go on to take it 25-10.
The third set was similar to the one prior. The Wildcats rolled to an 18-6 lead. The Clan had no shot at climbing back into the match. They dropped the final set 25-11.
Ironically enough, a freshman led the Wildcats on senior night.
Ashley Kaufman finished the match with 11 kills on a .286 hitting percentage. She'd add 11 digs to complete the double-double.
Makala Swart was a kill away from reaching her double-double. She had 11 digs and nine kills. Webb was efficient with her offensive attack. She had eight kills on a fantastic .500 hitting percentage.
Julia Mellander led the groups defensive efforts. She capped the night with six total blocks. One of them came on the solo effort.
"I was proud of how we locked in," Coach Andaya mentioned. "On senior night, you never know how it is going to go. They stayed the course and it turned out to be a really good night."
The Wildcats will wait for the NCAA Selection Show to find out if they'll advance to the NCAA Tournament. Fans can find the Selection Show at NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 25, at 4:30 p.m.
