Portland, Ore. (FEB. 22) - The Central Washington University softball team trounced the Simpson University Redhawks 12-3 in their opening game of the Cavalier Classic on Friday night.
Lexie Strasser (4-2) was excellent in the circle for the Wildcats (6-3) against the Redhawks (9-4). Strasser pitched the complete five innings, striking out six batters. She allowed just four hits, while allowing no walks and no earned runs.
"Lexie and Theresa performed really well," CWU head coach Mike Larabee said. "Lexie was dominate tonight. She located her pitches well and mixed her stuff up. They were both great."
Offensively, the Wildcats opened the game by stringing together three straight hits. With the basses loaded, Maddy Zerr drew a walk that scored Katie Kastning. Later, a wild pitch plated Theresa Moyle. The Wildcats left the first inning with a 2-0 lead.
The next inning, Katie Kastning ripped a single up the middle that scored two runs. The Wildcats took advantage of a Redhawk fielding error, as Zerr hustled to the plate. Kayla Smith grounded out to third base, allowing Kastning to score. Through two, the Wildcats led 6-0.
The third inning opened with Julia Rueble drawing a walk. Sydney Williams entered the game as a pinch runner. She promptly stole second base, putting herself in scoring position with nobody out. Rachael Johnson smacked a double that scored Williams. Later, Moyle swatted another Wildcat double, scoring Keegan Wise and Johnson.
Alycia Bannan banged a lead-off home run in the bottom of the fourth. Bannan's solo blast put the Wildcats up 10-1. The bases were loaded for Alee Cruz, who grounded out to the pitcher. Scoring on the play was Sydney Brown.
Moyle and Kastning were the offensive standouts for the Wildcats. Moyle finished the day 2-for-3 with a double, three runs batted in and a run scored. Kastning went 2-for-2 with a two RBI's and a run scored.
"I was really impressed with our offense," Larabee said. "We scored runs in every inning. We hit some balls really hard at people. I thought we had a really fine performance at the plate."
It's a quick turnaround for the Wildcats, as they take on Eastern Oregon at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Later in the day, the Wildcats have a rematch with Simpson University scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
