Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Clan's Three-Point Attack Downs Wildcats

Ellensburg, Wash. (FEB. 23) – The Central Washington University women's basketball team had four players score in double figures, but the three-point shooting from Simon Fraser proved to be too much for the Wildcats to overcome as they fell to the Clan 83-73 on Saturday night.

The Wildcats (16-9, 11-7) and Clan (17-8, 13-5) exchanged leads nine times throughout the contest. The Clan gained their advantage from beyond the three-point arc, going 13-for-26 for the game. The Clan also outscored the Wildcats on the break 10-2.

"They made us a pay anytime we made a mistake," CWU head coach Randi Richardson-Thornley said. "It's hard to beat a team when they shoot for 50 percent from three-point range. We held them to a little bit lower numbers in terms of total from three tonight, but I when they got them up they knocked them down. I hope our team learned a little bit about attention to detail and not taking possessions off on defense."

The second quarter started with the two teams tied at 24. With 6:51 left in the first half, Tayler Drynan knocked in a three-pointer. On the Clan's next two possessions, Jessica Jones who two three-pointers that put her squad up 39-29. The Wildcats were unable to cut into the lead, as they trailed 47-37 at halftime.

The Wildcats opened the second half with a 11-3 run. A Taylor Shaw three-pointer cut the Clan lead to 51-48. The Clan responded with a 9-3 run, owning a 60-50 lead with 4:08 to play in the quarter. As time wound down in the quarter, Alexis Pana hit a three to cut the Clan lead to five points. The Clan were able to extend their lead back to 10 points in the fourth quarter. It would stay there for the remainder of the contest.

Kaelie Flores had a strong night offensively for the Wildcats. Flores scored 18 points, while going 8-for-13 from the field. Sadie Mensing was fantastic on her senior night, scoring 16 points on a 7-for-11 from the field. Mensing pulled down four rebounds while dishing out five rebounds. Pana and Shaw scored 13 points each.

Prior to tip-off, the careers of Aliyah Pana and Mensing were celebrated.

"Aliyah has just led by example," Richardson-Thornley said. "She's such a great person with a great heart. She showed up every day and made it about the team. Sadie's had a great four years. The best thing about Sadie is that she's always given her best. She's always done what they team has needed and has never questioned anything. Both of our seniors have made impacts on our culture and those impacts will be felt later down the road. I want them to know that any success we have in the future, they are a part of it."

The Wildcats hit the road for their final regular season conference games. They take on the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday. Then on Saturday, the Wildcats take on the University of Alaska Anchorage. Both games tip-off at 8:00 p.m. PST.
