Wildcats Go Dutch With Western Oregon as Fahsel Wears One For a Walk-Off HBP

BELLEVUE, Wash. (Mar. 10) – The Central Washington University baseball team (7-6-1, 4-2) split its doubleheader with Western Oregon University (6-2, 4-2) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchups, 8-3 and 4-3.

"Hoef did a great job," CWU Head Baseball Coach Desi Storey said.  "We didn't do a whole lot offensively in the second half of the game.  Our bullpen struggled and we allowed them to creep back into the game.  Connor has been so good for us, we just haven't given him consistent run support.  Josh [Touhey] came in and did a good job.  Fortunately, we got into a situation where we were able to square up a couple balls and get a couple key walks.  Adam squares up and wears one, game over.  Wasn't pretty but we'll take it.  It's about the W at the end."

Tyler Hoefer got the start for the Wildcats in game one.  Hoefer went 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs, four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.  AJ Wood (0-2) was charged with the loss in relief.  He went 1.1 innings, allowed three hits, two earned runs, four walks, and two strikeouts.

Central Washington found the scoreboard first.  Yi-an Pan hit a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Michael Peter

Mitch Lesmeister swatted a two-run homerun in the bottom of the third inning, extending the Crimson and Black's lead to 3-0.

The Wolves struck back in the sixth inning.  Connor McCord hit a sacrifice line drive, scoring Patrick Chung.  Jared McDonald then had an RBI groundout, before Josh McIntyre roped an RBI double to center field.  Derek Maiben followed with a single through the left side, giving the Wolves a 4-3 advantage.

In the top of the seventh Griffey Halle lifted a fly ball to left, but it was mishandled allowing Colin Runge.  Chung then belted a double to center field in the top of the eighth for an RBI.  McDonald rounded out the scoring in game one, singling up the middle to drive in a pair of runs for the 8-3 lead.

Alex Roth (2-0) hurled six innings for the Wolves.  He allowed three earned runs on four hits.  He struck out 12 hitters.  McCord recorded his second save of the season, tossing three innings of shutout baseball.  The southpaw struck out six hitters and allowed just one hit.

Connor Stevenson toed the rubber in game two.  He went five innings and allowed just four hits, two earned runs, and he struck out three.  Josh Touhey earned the win over two innings of relief.  He allowed one run, two hits, and struck out one.

Western Oregon plated their first run in the second inning on a double to right from D. Maiben.  In the fourth inning, D. Maiben singled through the left side to drive in McDonald.  Halle then blasted a solo shot to straight away center field, giving the Wolves a 3-0 lead.

Austin Crowson held the Wildcats' offense in check through six innings of work.  He allowed just four hits, one walk, and struck out 11.

Grant Fisher came on in the top of the seventh inning, looking to close the door.  Colton Turner led off with a single up the middle.  Michael Hickey pinch hit and drew a walk, before Jason Hill also drew a walk to load the bases.  After a strikeout, Lesmeister singled through the right side to score Turner.  A wild pitch on an 0-0 to Yi-Fan Pan brought Hickey home and made the game 2-2.  Kolby Bales came on with a 1-0 count to Yi-Fan, who slapped a single through the right side.  The Wolves intentionally walked Yi-an Pan to reload the bases for Adam Fahsel

Fahsel squared around to bunt, but Bale's 0-0 offering ran inside and plunked Fahsel to drive in Lesmeister for a walk-off win.

The Crimson and Black are back in action tomorrow (Mar. 11) for another GNAC doubleheader.  First pitch starts at 1:00 p.m.
