Wildcats Drop Two More to WOU

MONMOUTH, ORE – The Central Washington University baseball team (14-23-1, 11-21), lost their final regular season games to Western Oregon University (22-10, 20-10). The Wolves swept the Wildcats for the first this season.

The day started with the continuation of the second game of the series as it was suspended on Friday afternoon due to rain. Game two resumed in the top of the seventh inning with Justin Hampson on second base and Jesse Unger hitting. Unger was able to reach after getting hit by a pitch but the next two hitters weren't able to make anything of the opportunity.

Game three of the series started today at noon like regularly scheduled. The scoring didn't start until the fourth inning of the game. The Wildcats were first on the board scoring after a Justin Hampson single up the middle and then came around to score after Jaden Hassell sent a ball up the middle.

WOU came back in the bottom half of the inning and put three runs on the board thanks to the help of a Wildcat fielding error and some good hits from the Wolves. Western went on to add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and then four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Central tried to make their comeback by adding two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Hassell hit a double that brought in Unger and then Michael Hickey brought in Hassell with a single to centerfield.

The Wildcats then added another run in the top of the ninth after Pan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Central wasn't able to add anything else in the game and dropped game three of the series by score of 9-4. Hunter French was given his sixth loss of the season after going 5.2 innings and gave up 5 runs on three hits. French struck out three and walked three in the game.

Game four started out better for the Wildcats as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after their first time to the plate. Mitch Lesmeister started the game off by getting hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a balk. Hampson then doubled to right center pushing Lesmeister to third. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch to Hassell who later grounded out to bring in Hampson.

The Wolves struck back for three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Central then tied the game after Pan grounded out to bring in Hampson in the third inning. Western again answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-3 lead. The Wildcats only other runs on the day came in the top of the fourth inning.

Central started a two out rally. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hassell had a two run RBI single that brought in Lesmeister and Trevor Tripoli. The Wildcat offense couldn't do anything more than that and ended up dropping game four by score of 6-5.

"We just didn't capitalize when we needed too," Said CWU Head Coach Desi Storey. "We didn't give enough run support and our pitchers couldn't lock down when we needed them to. We didn't play bad by any means, we just didn't execute at key moments and that's what hurt us."

This weekend marked the first time this season that Central was swept in a four game series and has knocked the Wildcats out of the playoff picture. Central will be back in action next weekend as they host Montana State University Billings for the Wildcats senior weekend.
