ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Apr. 27) - The Central Washington University baseball team had their senior day spoiled by Montana State University Billings as they dropped both games by scores of 29-4 and 14-7 on Saturday.
"We just weren't good enough today," CWU Head Baseball Coach Desi Storey said. "The wind is obviously a factor, but it's a factor for both teams. We are making very difficutlt ofr ourselves to make the conference tournament."
It was another quick start for the Yellowjackets in game one against the Wildcats. The 'Jackets scored nine runs on eight hits before the Wildcats could even swing their bats. The Yellowjackets would go on to set a program record with 29 runs scored in a single game. They also set a program record with 31 hits in a single game.
The Wildcats began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom half. Jaden Hassell continued his hot hitting, shooting a double into the right field corner. Mitch Lesmeister scored on the play. Yi-Fan Pan came through with a single into left field that scored Justin Hampson. Robert Ball smacked a sacrifice fly to left field through brought in Hassell. The shift was on for Luke Smith. Smith snuck one through the shift to drive in another run for the Wildcats. At the end of the first inning, the Wildcats trailed 9-4. The Wildcats failed to scored a run for the remainder of the game.
The Yellowjackets found themselves leading 3-0 midway through the second inning of game two. They 'Jackets took advantage of two errors made by the Wildcats in the second inning.
The Wildcats got on the board in the fifth inning. Lesmeister scorched a ball down the right field line. Michael Peter and Jesse Unger motored home to score. Later in the inning, Hassell squirted a ball through the right side that scored Lesmeister. The bases were loaded for a pinch-hitting Adam Fahsel. Fahsel hit a chopper towards the shortstop that wasn't fielded, resulting in a run for the Wildcats. A passed ball pushed across another run for the Wildcats. At the end of the fifth inning, the Wildcats trailed 12-5.
Jacob Forrester came on in the ninth, recording every out of the inning via the strike out.
The Wildcats travel to Northwest Nazarene for the regular-season finale next weekend.
