NAMPA, ID –The Central Washington University baseball team (16-31-1, 13-27) wrapped up their season with the final games of the final series of the season against Northwest Nazarene University (24-22, 20-17). The Wildcats lost both games on the day to finish their season on a one and three weekend.
Game one was a blow out. NNU won game one by a score of 21-4. The Nighthawks scored at least one run in every inning except two. They put up 16 runs in the first three innings with the help of four homerun's in the innings. NNU put up five runs in the first and then eight in the third inning. On the bright side,
Mitch Lesmeister,
Robert Ball, and
Colton Turner all homered in the game. The only other run of the game for Central came in the eighth inning when
Justin Hampson flied out to left field and brought in Lesmeister.
Game two was a better start for the Wildcats.
Jacob Forrester got the nod for the start which marked the first one in his career. The senior went three innings and didn't give up a single hit in the 11 batters that he faced. He struck out three batters and walked two on the day.
Ryan Marstiller was handed the loss even though he only gave up one run. The junior pitched 2.1 innings and struck out four batters while giving up just one hit. The one run that he gave up was in the fourth inning after an error allowed a runner to come in for the Nighthawks.
Going into the top of the fifth inning, the Wildcats were trailing 5-2. Central went on to add three runs in the inning. The first run came after
Jason Hill singled and brought in
Jaden Hassell.
Michael Peter then came up and hit a doubled to left center and brought in both Hill and Ball.
Central's four errors proved to be one of the things that hurt the Wildcats the most. However, one positive of the game was that the Wildcat's didn't strike out a single time all game which has been a huge weak point for Central all year.
"Our pitchers struggled today and it didn't help that our defense struggled as well as our run production," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "We had a couple guys that had a good individual performance today. Jason (Hill) had five hits on the day in his eight at-bats, Jacob (Forrester) did a great job in a role that hes never been in before and gave us a great start to game two. Mitch (Lesmeister) had four hits on the day including a triple and a homerun."
Today marks the final game of the season for the Wildcat baseball team as they were not able to make the final spot in the playoffs. We want to thank
James Brooks,
Connor Stevenson,
Robert Ball, and
Jacob Forrester for a great collegiate baseball career.
