Women's Soccer Midfield Preview

Throughout fall camp, WildcatSports.com will take a closer look at each position group as the Central Washington soccer team finalizes preparations for the 2019 season. Today, we distribute through the neutral third with the midfielders.

Central's midfield lost seniors Kennedy Anson, KK Wallace, and Lexsi Manning, but the Wildcats still show depth through the middle third.

Sophia Keenan returns to the lineup after appearing in 17 games last season with 12 starts.  She recorded one goal in 2018 while playing 919 minutes.

Sydney Lowe also returns to the Wildcats' lineup after recording five points in 2018.  The sophomore midfielder scored one goal and picked up three assists during the last campaign.  Lowe played 768 minutes, appeared in 14 games, and started seven.

Joining the midfield ranks this season is Olivia Sloan.  She primarily played on the Wildcats' back line during 2018, but will roam the midfield for Head Coach Michael Farrand this year.  Sloan picked up one assist last season, but her pacy play will make her a dangerous asset for the Wildcats.

Bella Brown also returns in the Wildcats' midfield.  She appeared in 16 games last season, accumulating 515 minutes played.

The final returning midfielder is Paige Devine.  She appeared in 17 games, starting eight, for Central last season.  Devine scored one goal during her freshman season and accumulated 980 minutes.

Newcomers to the midfield include Meagan Kelly, Madison Hinkel, and Teryn Mendez.

Hinkel is a 5-foot-4 midfielder from Lynnwood, Washington.  She helped guide the Royals of Lynnwood high to a state championship in 2018.  Hinkel played in the National League from 2016-18.   She was named a First Team All-Wesco selection in both her junior and senior campaigns.  Hinkel also owns the all-time assist record at Lynnwood.

Mendez is a 5-foot-2 midfielder from Kennedy Catholic High School in Seattle.  She began her varsity career as a freshman at Kennedy, earning honorable mention accolades in both her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Kelly joins the Wildcats from Renton, Washington where she played for Hazen High School.  She was a three-year starter for the Highlanders, earning honorable mention her freshman year and NPSL All-League Second Team honors during her sophomore and junior seasons.

"In the midfield, we return a handful of experience with Paige, Syd, Liv, and Sophia all looking to be key players in the 2019 squad," CWU Graduate Assistant Madison Kroger said.  "Sophia will primarily play the attacking midfielder role where she can use her vision and strengths to be a true playmaker for us.  Bella and Madison [Hinkel] give us depth and a fun attacking flair along the midfield line.  This will be a fun group to watch as they mature and mesh as a unit throughout the season."
