Vogel's Golden Goal Lifts Wildcats Over SFU

Burnaby, B.C. — It took extra time, but the Central Washington University women's soccer team toppled Simon Fraser University (0-4-1), 2-1, on Peyton Vogel's overtime goal.

The Wildcats (3-3-0) allowed an early shot to Giulana Zaurrini, but Megan Fox parried the effort on goal.  In the 14th minute Zaurrini found another chance, but sent her opportunity over the bar.

After being held quiet for the opening 18 minutes, Central's offense pinned Simon Fraser deep in their own end.  Four consecutive corner kicks for the Crimson and Black a pair of shots near the 20th minute.  Madison Bradley's effort was blocked by a defender, before a header from Paige Devine was turned aside by Nicole Anderson.

Simon Fraser's offense found its way back to the shot chart in the 26th minute as Hollis Roeske fired a shot towards goal.

Sophia Keenan nearly broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 34th minute, but Anderson was able to stymie the goalwards effort.  A pair of shots from Simon Fraser two minutes later were snuffed out by Wildcat defenders.

Olivia Sloan had the first half's final chance in the 41st minute, but again Anderson was able to preserve the 0-0 tie.

Coming out of half time, Bradley fired a shot on goal in the 51st minute, but Anderson made her fourth stop of the game.  Kiana Harris whistled a shot high in the 53rd minute.

In the 61st minute Central broke the deadlock.  Madison Hinkel scored her first career goal, giving the 'Cats a 1-0 advantage.  She nearly put up a brace as well, but a headed effort from Hinkel in the 72nd minute ended above the cross bar.

Searching for the equalizer, Zaurinni sent a chance goalwards in the 74th minute.  Fox made her second save of the net, however, leading to a Central counter attack.  Earning another corner, Bella Brown found Madison Hinkel for a chance at goal but Anderson came to the rescue once more for Simon Fraser.

The Clan's offense mounted pressure in the 81st minute.  A shot from Zaurrini was parried by Fox for an SFU corner kick.  Simon Fraser blasted a pair of shots from Teagan Mackay and Doreen Anane-Bediakoh, but Fox turned both shots aside.

Simon Fraser converted in the 85th minute.  A corner taken by Kiara Buono opened a chance for Zaurrini, who slotted her shot in the back of the net and leveled the score at 1-1.

Each side had one more chance in regulation.  Mackay got her chance for the Clan in the. 88th minute, but her shot was blocked.  The Wildcats' final chance in regulation came from Kylee Dillon, but her shot was met by Anderson to force overtime.

Mackay was busy for the Clan in the first minutes of overtime.  She fired off two quick shots, the first was blocked before the latter went wide.  She got another chance in the 96th minute, but Fox kept it out.  On the ensuing counter attack, Vogel's shot was stopped by Anderson.

As time waned the first overtime period, Vogel played the hero.  She was able to beat Anderson with her shot in the 99th minute for the golden goal winner.

"Peyton got a really nice ball from Bradley in the box and was able to finish," CWU Head Coach Michael Farrand said afterward.  "We were solid for 80 minutes or so, but we gave up five corners in the last 10 minutes.  We need to tighten up a bit, but overall it was a solid game.  It's a great way to start the conference portion of the schedule.  It's a big win for us, we survived to open GNAC play with a win and get points early."

Central Washington was outshot 14-12 by Simon Fraser, but the Wildcats held the advantage in shots on goal 9-7.  Central received 11 corners, while the Clan took just eight.  Fox made six stops on the way to the Wildcats' third victory of 2019.

The Crimson and Black are back in action next Thursday (Oct. 3).  They take on rival Western Washington in Bellingham.  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
