Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Soccer Falls 1-0 to San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell in the second match of their young season in a 1-0 defeat to Cal State San Marcos (1-0-0).

The Wildcats (1-1-0) opened their season with a 2-1 victory over Fresno Pacific University on Thursday.

Cal State San Marcos were the first to attempt a shot on goal.  Hannah Arcala found an opening the fifth minute and fired a shot goalwards, but Emily Thomson turned the shot aside.

Sydney Lowe got the Wildcats' offense started, taking her side's first shot in the 12th minute.  Bailey Cockrill was able to parry the chance, however, to keep the game on level pegging.

The Cougars found the contest's lone goal in the 23rd minute.  Arcala blasted a shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

Defensively, neither team was willing to budge after the goal.  The Cougars allowed just two more tries at goal for the Wildcats, a shot from Bella Brown in the 33rd minute and a shot from Peyton Vogel as the whistle sounded for half time.

Central went into the locker room down 1-0.

"Great start for us," CWU Head Coach Michael Farrand said.  "We started hard and played even, but we got through the first 20 or 25 minutes and miscommunicated on a ball over the middle.  That left the goal open, bit of an oops goal.  Back-to-back games where we have given up a bit of an easier goal.  We started the second half and ended up sitting back and tried to play in our half.  We lost the opportunity to play forward and create chances.  Made a few adjustments, able to get Mack in on a breakaway but the keeper made a save.  We just weren't able to put ourselves back in the game offensively.  We will come back home, get tuned up, and head down to Nampa.  Our player of the match today was Chelsea Marozik.  She had another consistent game where she own balls and had an impact for us."

Cal State San Marcos' offense went back to work early in the second half, firing a pair of consecutive shots in the 59th minute.  Megan Fox was able to turn both shots from Meredith Curran and Madyson Brown away, keeping the deficit at just one goal.

Ashleigh Peterson fired a shot wide left in the 64th minute for the Cougars, missing a chance for the brace.  The Cougars' defense kept Central's offense quiet until the 79th minute.

Makinzie Packwood broke the offensive silence for the Crimson and Black, but her shot was kept out by Yesenia Bettancourt.

The Wildcats did have a pair of corner kicks late in the contest, coming back-to-back in the 86th minute, but they were not able to capitalize.

As time dwindled in the second half, Arcala took one more effort at goal for San Marcos, but again Fox was there to make the save.

Central Washington heads to Nampa, Idaho for a tournament, where they will play Cal State East Bay and Hawaii Hilo.  Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 12) against East Bay and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 14) against Hilo.
