Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Explosive Second Quarter Leads Wildcats Over Cavaliers

PORTLAND, Ore. — Four players scored in double digits as the Central Washington University women's basketball team rolled past Concordia University (Ore.), 75-54.

The Wildcats (10-7, 5-4 GNAC) were led by Alexis Pana (18), Taylor Shaw (16), JonNae Richardson (14), and Kaelie Flores (12).  Flores and Richardson each chipped in six rebounds each.

After seven minutes of relatively even play, the Crimson and Black found themselves trailing 15-12 before Shaw knocked down a three to level the score late in the first quarter.  Bri Phiakhamngon picked up a defensive rebound, scored on the possession, and converted the free throw to put Central ahead 18-15.  A three-point play for the Cavaliers tied the score again with 2:15 left in the first quarter.

Flores made the most of her trip to the charity stripe on the Wildcats' next possession, converting both for a 20-18 advantage.  Richardson extended the 'Cats lead to four, pickpocketing Kelsey Hudson and taking the fast break to the hoop for a 24-18 lead after 10 minutes.

Central Washington wasted no time picking up where they left off, extending the lead to nine in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter.  A trey from Shaw with 7:14 left in the quarter gave the Crimson and Black their first double digit lead of the evening, 32-20.  The Wildcats outscored Concordia 25-4 in the second quarter, shooting over 75 percent from the floor in the second period.  They ended the first half with three players with 10 or more points and a shooting percentage of 64.5.  Central knocked down eight treys, while holding the Cavaliers to and 0-for-6 mark from beyond the arc.  The Wildcats led 55-26 at halftime.

"Happy with our team's performance tonight, especially in the first half," CWU Head Coach Randi Richardson-Thornley said.  "We took a step forward in our offensive execution.  Next step is to be consistent with that for 40 minutes, but I'm very happy with the progress we saw tonight."

Taking a 29-point lead into the second half, the Crimson and Black never looked back.  The shooting woes continued for the Cavaliers, as they were unable to slow down the Wildcats' offense.  Concordia failed to convert on a single three-point attempt, finishing 0-for-14.  Pana scored 11 points in the second half, leading Central's offense.

The Wildcats' bench outscored Concordia's 18-6.  Kassidy Malcolm led Central Washington's rebounding efforts, compiling eight rebounds on the night.  She also recorded five points and three assists.  Richardson finished 6-for-9 from the floor, including a perfect 2-for-2 beyond the arc.  Shaw shot 50 percent from the floor and knocked down a team-high five treys.

Central is back in action on Saturday (Jan. 25) as they travel to Western Oregon for a GNAC matchup.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
