Women's Rugby Fends Off EWU

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University women's rugby team captured a Senior Day victory over Eastern Washington University, 94-0.

"Today was all about our seniors, honoring them, and the legacy they are leaving us," CWU Head Coach Trevor Richards said.  "They've put in a lot of work over the years, especially going through the coaching changes over the last few years.  They have set the standard for our younger players."

Bianca Ortiz-Pallen started the scoring for the Wildcats.  She plunged over the line in the third minute to give CWU an early lead.  Mikayla Roberts made it 7-0 with the conversion.

Three minutes later, Suiluana Sooialo A'au made her way in.  She barreled through the Eagles' defenders for his first try and a 14-0 lead.  No more than 60 seconds later, Madison Hadden notched her first try under the uprights.  Roberts added her third conversion to make it 21-0.

Maryjane Pasioles added a try in the ninth minute as the flurry of scoring continued for Central Washington. Hadden followed in the 13th minute with her second try and a 33-0 advantage.

Central broke free again in the 17th minute.  Jaida Kafovalu fended off a pair of defenders as she made her way in for the try.  Two minutes later, Michel Navarro tore through the Eagles' defense and grounded the ball for a try and a 45-0 lead.

Senior Paige Wyatt joined the scoring ledger in the 22nd minute with a try.  Roberts tacked on the conversion to make it 52-0.

Ortiz-Pallen found her way into the try zone for a second time in the 24th minute.  Not to be outdone, Hadden acquired her third try in the 26th minute to secure the hat trick.  Ortiz-Pallen later added her third try for the hat trick in the 30th minute.  Sandwiched in between Ortiz-Pallen and Hadden, Shona Kennedy scored for CWU in the 28th minute.

After 30 minutes of play, the Wildcats led 80-0.  Three minutes into the second half, Wyatt tallied her second try.  Chloe Washburn then scored in the 35th minute after coming on as a tactical substitution.

The game was halted in the 38th minute for a 94-0 victory for CWU.

Central Washington's next match is scheduled for March 14 against Oregon Sports Union Rugby.  Kick-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
