After picking up a win against Div. I Seattle and falling to the Bulldogs at Gonzaga, the 'Cats are headed to California for another challenge ahead of conference play.
"We are excited to head down to Turlock for two games against two good in-region opponents. Some challenges will be present in the fact that neither team played last season. So, what we know about each program is less than normal. However, it will be a good opportunity for our team to have to work on making adjustments on the fly and focus on bringing out best to the table first." Said CWU Head Coach
Randi Richardson-Thornley.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
Much like the 'Cats, the Warriors did not see much action in the abbreviated 2020-21 season. In the 2019-20 season, the Warriors posted a 15-14 overall record including a loss to the 'Cats in Nicholson, 85-76.
In the 2019-20 season the Warriors averaged 69.0 points per game alongside a .382 shooting percentage, .326 average from beyond the arc, and .663 average at the free-throw line. More importantly the Warriors averaged 11.2 steals per game, 3.8 more than their opponents all season.
The Warriors are returning their scoring leader, Kyanna Davis. Davis, the 5' 9" forward, averaged 12.8 points on a .342 shooting percentage and .321 from beyond the arc. Davis also had a team high .819 shooting percentage from the line and led the team in rebounds averaging 7.0 per game.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
The Pioneers also did not see action in the abbreviated 2020-21 season. In 2019-20, they posted an 18-12 overall record including an upset win over then No. 24 Cal State San Marcos, and a win over previous GNAC opponent Concordia (Ore.).
In 2019-20 the Pioneers averaged 68.5 points per game alongside a team shooting percentage of .425 as well as .310 from beyond the arc. The Pioneers matched opponents with a .702 average at the line, but out-rebounded opponents with an average of 37.0 per game, with a 7.0 margin.
The Pioneers see the return of Madison Schiller from the 2019-20 roster. Schiller, the 5' 9" guard, averaged 9.2 points per game on a .434 shooting percentage and shot .741 from the line. Schiller also held team highs in assists with 71, and steals with 54.
THE WILDCATS THIS SEASON
The 2021-22 'Cats roster is full of fresh faces, and a lot of young talent. Leading the 'Cats is redshirt senior
Kassidy Malcolm. The Ellensburg native has been a pivotal piece of the 'Cats offense the past few seasons. Alongside Malcolm is center
Samantha Bowman, guard
Kizzah Maltezo, guard
Jenna Troy, forward
Kiera Bush, and guard
Tori Maeda who all saw action in the only two games for the 'Cats last season.
Plenty of young talent have already made their marks as freshman
Brinley Hagemeier,
Amanda Sisul,
Valerie Huerta and
Claire Heitschmidt have made their share of an impact in the 'Cats two exhibition games. The 'Cats will look to be more versatile with new weapons from freshman
Shaylee Coulter-Faamafu.
