MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Central Washington University soccer team fell to Humboldt State University, 4-1.
The Wildcats' (1-2-0) lone goal came from
Bella Brown in the 84
th minute. Humboldt State (2-0-1) outshot Central 13-7, including a 9-3 margin for shots on goal.
"We continue to struggle in crucial portions of the game," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We gave up a goal off a set piece in the first five minutes. We gave up a goal at the end of the first half again and we gave up two more set piece goals. Our scouting report was good, we knew their set pieces were crucial and we didn't react. We didn't play attacking soccer. Bella got a good goal late and gave us a spark, but we have a lot of work to do before we get to Point Loma. We are going to head home and try put the wheels back on."
Humboldt State's Kendal Spencer gave the Jacks an early 1-0 lead in the 4
th minute. She took a pass from Kelsey Bess off the corner and loosed a deep shot from the right wing which found the back of the net.
The Jacks were on the attack again in the 11
th minute. Clara Lenihan fired a shot which
Megan Fox turned aside. Humboldt's second goal came in the 23
rd minute. Spencer took a pass from Lenihan and launched another shot from range. Her shot careened off the post and into the net.
Central's first chance came in the 25
th minute.
Emily Darcy had her shot attempt blocked by a Jacks' defender. The Crimson and Black had another chance in the 32
nd minute when
Megan Meindersee's shot went over the top of the bar.
A 33
rd minute chance from Mia Castaneda was met with resistance from Fox, as the Wildcat keeper kept the score at 2-0.
Casey Park and
Sydney Lowe had a pair of chances in the 36
th and 39
th minutes. Park's shot was high, while Lowe's attempt came off a corner kick and was blocked by a defender.
In the 40
th minute Fox was called into action again, turning aside a shot from Brooke Weese. On the ensuing corner kick, Maya Davis rung the crossbar with a shot before Weese cleaned up the rebound for a 3-0 lead.
Kelsey Bess made it 4-0 in the 52
nd minute. Spencer and Baylee Groom set the table for Bess' shot in front of the net to extend the lead.
Fox made another save in the 58
th minute, stymying a chance from Bess. In the 64
th minute a shot attempt from Groom was blocked.
Central was forced to play with 10 players after being issued a red card in the 66
th minute. The Wildcats made a change in goal in the 74
th minute, bringing on
Kassandra Jaggard for her collegiate debut. Just four minutes after coming on she turned away Weese for the first save of her career.
The Crimson and Black avoided the clean sheet with a goal from Brown in the 8
th minute. Park found Brown in front of the goal to make it 4-1. It was Brown's first goal of the season.
Central Washington is back in action on Saturday (September 18) when they host Point Loma at Tomlinson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
