Wildcats Win Tussle With Cougars 40-17

Women's Rugby was on the road for the third straight week as they took on BYU in Provo, Utah. It was a slow start for the Wildcats as the pace and pressure of BYU caused some handling errors and tested the decision-making of Central Washington. "Full credit to BYU this evening. They put on some great pressure and made us force one too many errors to feel comfortable in the first half," coach Matt Ramirez said. The Wildcats' scrum proved dominant once again winning back the ball multiple times to help keep CWU on the attack.

The Wildcats were able to get some quality ball and go forward as Kerena Tinoisamoa got over for the first score of the game in the corner in the 11th minute. Tessa Hann continued her scoring streak to four consecutive games as the loose forward went between the posts following a lineout and Kai Brandt-Templeton added the extras. The Cougars took advantage of a penalty by the Wildcats and slotted a penalty kick to make the score 12-3 at the break, but Central just looked out of rhythm for the majority of the first forty minutes.

"We had an honest chat at halftime about what we needed to do to settle down and get back to the basics. Everybody was accountable and understood, and we started to problem-solve as a team. It was great to see the response the squad had in the second half." Ramirez added.

Jessica Postle continued to make a name as a solid ball carrier, taking an offload from Hann and finding a gap to cross the line in the 50th minute to start the second half scoring. The Cougars answered right away with a try of their own after a CWU penalty deep in their own zone. The Wildcats settled in and saw the points rise on the board as Lilly Thomas, Emma McCabe, and Mariah Tuitasi all scored tries. The Cougars never backed down scoring again in the closing minutes bringing the final tally to 40-17 in favor of Central Washington.

The Wildcats will return home for a three-game home stand starting with Lindenwood University next Saturday at Noon PST.
