Thorne, Daoud-Hebert Propel Wildcats to Sweep of Red Leafs

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Kylie Thorne and Emma Daoud-Hebert put together massive performances to help the Central Washington University volleyball team sweep the Simon Fraser Red Leafs on Thursday (25-22, 25-11, 25-20).

Thorne had a team-high 14 kills and added seven digs. Daoud-Hebert finished with 11 kills and a team-leading six blocks.

"The intent was evident tonight," Head Coach Mario Andaya said. "Offensively, it was a good night. Marianna, Kylie and Emma kept coming up with timely kills. Sydney and Tia ran a great ofense."

The team as a whole put up a stellar .417 attacking percentage while limiting Simon Fraser to .157.

Marianna Payne registered nine kills. Ashley Kaufman and Hannah Stires both led the team in digs (10 each) and Kaufman added five kills. Sydney Remsberg led the team in assists (22).

In the first set, the Wildcats jumped our to a 5-3 lead, capitalized by a Thorne kill. For the entire set, the Red Leafs stayed within attacking distance and at 23-22, one team had to make a move. An SFU service error followed by an Andaya ace clinched the set victory for the 'Cats 25-22.

The offensive momentum picked up in the second set for CWU. At 15-6, the Wildcats had a commanding lead. After SFU took four of the next five points, the Crimson and Black struck back. The team rattled off nine of the next 10 points to win the set 25-11.

Halfway through the third set, the score was tied 15-15. The Wildcats went on the run, taking seven of the following 10 points to take a 22-18 lead. There was no chance the 'Cats were going to relinquish the lead and Andaya put away the set and match clinching point 25-20.

The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1:00 p.m. as they face the #10 Western Washington Vikings.
