ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Washington University women's rugby team put together a dominating performance on Saturday, routing the Boise State Broncos 107-0
Â
"Hats off to Boise State," Head Coach
Matthew Ramirez said. "The pressure that they put on us in the first half forced us into too many handling errors, tries being held up and challenged our decision making. They made our young squad work for it. They just kept coming, and that is a true reflection of their character and coaching. They are doing what is needed to help grow the game in this region and we look forward to seeing them again."
Â
The Wildcats made several changes in the lineup for this game. In total, eight freshmen took the field today for CWU.
Â
"To be able to get valuable minutes for those that have been owning the roles as our finishers will set us up well as we close out the season and head into playoffs. We have been challenging them at training this week, and to see them implement the small things was great to see and helped create a clearer picture for our matchups for the following weeks."
Â
A total of ten Wildcats scored tries today. They were Malia Ili (4), Lilly Thomas (3),
Kerena Tinoisamoa (2), Jessica Postle (2),
Tru Thompson,
Noelle Inverso,
Elise Norris, Munalite Lolohea, Ellie Frost and
Oloa Ta'a.
Kai Brandt-Templeton knocked in 11 conversions.
Â
"We had two props out there in their first year as a Wildcat and both made a big impact. Malia Ili was a force on attack for us crossing the line four times in the game, but also put people through space and moved the ball well. Muna Lolohea upped her work rate and made a name for herself as a big hitter. At one point in the game, Muna had 3 consecutive positive tackles. Not an easy feat.
Tru Thompson was also putting in work out on the edge and backing herself was great to watch."
Â
Next Saturday, Nov. 5, the 'Cats (4-2) will take on Life University at noon to close out their D1 Elite regular season schedule.
Â
"We will dig into the film on today's match, review and get to work with some install for Life University next Saturday to close out the regular season. Should be a great match."
