Wolves Shock Wildcats in Defensive Struggle

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - In a battle between stout defenses, the Western Oregon Wolves shocked the Central Washington University football team with a touchdown in the final seconds as the Wildcats fell 14-16.

JJ Lemming started at QB for the Crimson and Black, logging 18 completions for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Tre'jon Henderson had another 100-yard performance on the ground along with a rushing touchdown.

Marcus Cook led CWU receivers with four receptions for 50 yards. Darius Morrison had three catches for 28 yards and one receiving touchdown. Payton Glasser had three catches for 25 yards.

Defensively, Patrick Rogers logged two interceptions. Jahleel Breland led the team in tackles (11). Kai Gamble had double-digit tackles (10) and tacked on two sacks, a team-high. Daeon Hudson registered nine tackles.

Western Oregon started the game with the ball and the CWU defense forced a punt. When the Wildcats got the ball, the Wolves defense returned the favor.

Punts were a common theme throughout tonight as Dan Stewart logged seven punts for 264 yards, an average of over 37 yards per punt for CWU.

Neither team found the scoreboard in the first quarter.

WOU's first possession of the second quarter led to a field goal. A defensive holding call on the 'Cats helped the Wolves get in field goal range and Danie Cossette hit it from 48 yards out to give Western Oregon a three-point lead.

Both offenses failed to muster anything else for the rest of the half and the Wildcats entered halftime down 0-3.

A poor WOU punt gave the Wildcats elite field position, with a drive starting at the WOU 37-yard line. The 'Cats took advantage as Lemming hit Morrison for an eight-yard touchdown as CWU took a 7-3 lead with 9:06 remaining in the third quarter.

Every other drive in the third quarter resulted in punts.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Crimson and Black took over with great field position. Just like they did in the third quarter, the offense took advantage. After Lemming connected with Glasser for 20 yards, Henderson punched it in from four yards out. CWU led 14-3 with 11:23 remaining in the game.

On the following WOU drive, the Wolves found the endzone. After a big play from Gannon Winker to Damon Hickok set up the Wolves in the redzone, Kainoa Jones rushed it in. Instead of opting to go for a two-point conversion and cut the Wildcat lead to three points, they kicked an extra point and the Wildcats led 14-10.

Later in the quarter, the Wolves got the ball with 3:45 remaining, needing to drive 75 yards to win the game. On 4th and 13 from the CWU 33-yard line, Winker found Hickok again. With nine seconds remaining, Winker found his running back, Omari Dixon-Land for a nine-yard receiving touchdown.

But, the drama wasn't over yet. On the extra-point attempt, Rogers blocked it. Jeremy Banks picked up the football and started running the other way. Bank's heroic run fell just short as he was tackled at the WOU one-yard line.

The Wildcats failed to generate any magic after the kickoff and lost by a final score of 14-16.

Next week, Midwestern State comes to Tomlinson Stadium for the Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 6:00 p.m.
