CWU Women's Rugby ended their East Coast tour with a 69-8 victory over Navy to go 2-0 on the trip.
"It's a big challenge to play three games within the span of a week to start the season, but the team stepped up and answered the call against a great Navy squad," said Ramirez. "Navy is in their first year of being a varsity sport under the athletic department at the US Naval Academy. "It's what we have been waiting for. For more programs to take that jump into the varsity realm helping grow this sport" added Ramirez.
The early kickoff didn't impact the team as scoring once again started off early as
Emma McCabe went over for her first try of the season. Central Washington was able to go to work in the middle of the field utilizing the forwards to move the point of contact, go forward and also put the pressure on Navy's set-piece resulting in tries from
Jessica Postle,
Winnie Namosimalua,
Ellie Frost and Maddie Hadden. Hadden, Jenn Aquino and
Kai Brandt-Templeton did well to complement each other by organizing the structure and putting the ball into space. The tries started coming at a frantic pace once again as the score was 47-0 at the half after
Tessa Hann and Namosimalua added two more scores before the whistle.
Navy never slowed down as the did well to utilize chop tackles and put pressure on the 'Cats. CWU were able to put together some more attacking phases with great support as Hadden crossed the line again after an offload and took it 40 meters to start the second half off strong. Postle added another try on the day and two other Wildcats added their first tries for Central Washington, as
Kerena Tinoisamoa and Mariah Tuitasi both scored after some hard charging.
Ramirez added, "The trip was a great one for the program. To play quality rugby against quality programs helped us work out some different combinations and made it apparent on what we can work on to improve as we head into the next part of the season. It was a complete team effort from start to finish in both games, but I think the biggest growth was amongst the team as a whole during the road trip and building that trust. Very proud of this squad."
Central Washington is on the road once again next week at BYU for a matchup Friday night.
