ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Washington University women's rugby team closed out their regular season schedule at home against the Life University Running Eagles, falling by a final score of 15-19.
Â
"As far as collegiate rugby games, that's about as close as it gets. We came out on the wrong side of the score line today, but we know what needs to be fixed, and how we're going to do it," Head Coach
Matthew Ramirez said. "One positive is that we'll get to face them again in the D1 Elite Semifinals in two weeks, and we're excited about the opportunity."
Â
The Wildcats honored their three seniors ahead of Saturday's match:
Keia Mae Sagapolu,
Shona Kennedy and
Madison Hadden.
Â
"Today was a performance they can be proud of, as they play their last 15's game here in Tomlinson," Coach Ramirez said. "All three seniors know that we're not done yet, and we're all looking forward to the semis in two weeks."
Â
The Crimson and Black jumped on the Running Eagles early and took a 10-7 lead into halftime. In the second half, Life battled back and a couple of timely tries along with solid defense stifled the 'Cats.
Maleena Mero, Malia Ili and Lilly Thomas scored tries for the Wildcats today.
Â
"We saw a lot of positive things out there today, and it was great to see Winnie have her game of the season so far," Coach Ramirez said. "I have to give credit to Mae for her physical play and line breaks. We have a few of our younger athletes stepping up, it's noticeable Lilly Thomas has put in a lot of work and is becoming a finisher for us."
Â
The Wildcats will get an opportunity to strike revenge against the Running Eagles in two weeks as the schools are set to face off in the D1 Elite Semifinals.
