Wildcats Fall in Anchorage to the Seawolves

ANCHORAGE, Alaska.—Kassidy Malcolm scored 28 points as Central Washington (15-5, 8-3 GNAC) fell to Alaska Anchorage (14-4, 7-3 GNAC) 78-68 in the final game of the Wildcats Alaska road trip.

The Wildcats still remain in the second behind Western Washington in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings, with Alaska Anchorage now in a close third. The Wildcats and Seawolves meet again in just a few short weeks on Monday, February 21st, at Nicholson Pavilion. The game is scheduled for a 5:15 p.m. start.

"I'm happy with our effort in the last three quarters," said Central Washington Head Coach Randi Richardson-Thornley. "Credit to UAA who shot the ball really well tonight and came out and dictated the first quarter which ended up being the difference in this game. There is a lot we can learn and take away from this lose which will hopefully make us stronger heading into the final seven games of the season."

Samantha Bowman grabbed 15 rebounds for the Wildcats while scoring 6 points. Bowman also had two blocks, three steals, and three assists. With her fourth rebound tonight, Bowman eclipsed 276 rebounds this season. The mark is now the Central Washington women's basketball program record for single-season total rebounds.

Malcolm was the offensive tool the Wildcats relied on all night, shooting 10-17 from the field, 4-10 from beyond the arc, and 4-4 at the line. Malcolm also finished with three rebounds and three assists.

Central was held to shooting just 38.1 percent from the floor and 35.0 percent from the three-point line. While CWU shot a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe, it was not enough to keep pace with the Seawolves.

CWU had to put big minutes on their starting five, utilizing each player for a minimum of 37 minutes tonight. The Seawolves led the Wildcats scoring 25 points off of the bench to the Wildcats five.

The Wildcats struggled in the post tonight, scoring just 18 points down low to UAA's 30.

Even while trailing the Seawolves by a high of 18 points in the second quarter, the Wildcats bounced back as the fourth quarter hit, pulling back to within three.

Unable to overcome the 16-point deficit from the first quarter, the Wildcats fell to the Seawolves 78-68.

Central Washington returns to Ellensburg to host Simon Fraser on Thursday, February 10th, at 5:15 p.m.
