ELLENSBURG, Wash.—Central Washington women's rugby suffered an 18-14 loss to BYU, Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.
Prior to the game, the Wildcats celebrated their three seniors –
Haley Abeyta,
Lauren Odette, and Maryjane Pasioles – as part of Senior Day festivities for the program. But the Wildcats were unable to deliver a victory for the trio despite their best efforts in what was a rough-and-tumble affair.
BYU jumped on the scoreboard early, converting a penalty kick in the third minute for a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars added to their advantage with a try in the 10
th minute but missed the conversion. Still, BYU maintained an 8-0 lead.
BYU's lead swelled to 13-0 with another try in the 14
th minute, before Central put together some offense.
Keia Mae Sagapolu battered her way across the try line in the 36
th minute for Central's first score of the day.
Kai Brandt-Templeton connected on the conversion to help the Wildcats cut the deficit to 13-7.
Pasioles gave the Wildcats their first lead o f the match with a try in the 47th minute. The conversion attempt by Brandt-Templeton was true and the Wildcats led, 14-13.
It remained a one-point match until the 66
th minute, when BYU crossed the try line for an 18-14 lead. The conversion failed but the Cougars never relinquished their lead.
The Wildcats close out the regular season when they host British Columbia, Noon, Saturday, April 2 at Tomlinson Stadium.
