TURLOCK, Calif. — Central Washington University softball closed the Tournament of Champions with a 5-1 victory over Cal State East Bay.
Rhaney Harris (9-7) went the distance for the Wildcats (15-17), allowing just one run. She struck out five. Anamarie Beard (9-6) was charged with the loss. She went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on five hits.
It didn't take long for the Wildcats to find the scoreboard. A two-out single in the bottom of the first from Makenna King brought Allie Thiessen in from third for a 1-0 lead.
Harris held the Pioneers scoreless through the first six innings. Their lone run came on a two-out single in the seventh inning.
"Rhaney pitched well once again," CWU Head Coach Joe DiPietro said. "She was ahead in the count most of the game. Makenna had a big hit to put us up a run and Harlee's triple was huge. Winning weekend and hopefully it carries over when we head to Saint Martin's this weekend."
After scoring I the first, Central Washington's bats were kept quiet until the fifth inning. Three straight bunt singles loaded the bases in the fifth. A sacrifice fly from Alyssa Benthagen scored Karsyn Decker, before Myiah Seaton drove in Harlee Carpenter with a single two pitches later.
The Wildcats' offense picked up another pair of runs in the sixth. Taylor Kai singled on an 0-1 pitch and moved to second when Decker was hit by a pitch. Carpenter then roped a triple to right center, driving in both Kai and Decker for a 5-0 lead.
East Bay's RBI single in the seventh made the contest 5-1 and Harris forced a fly out to seal the victory.
Central Washington finished the Tournament of Champions with a record of 3-2. They recorded eight hits against the Pioneers. Carpenter and Thiessen both finished 2-for-3.
The Crimson and Black return to GNAC play this weekend, traveling to Saint Martin's University on Saturday (April 9) and Sunday (April 10). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
